It's Campus Sustainability Month, Panthers! This month, we aim to raise the visibility of campus sustainability efforts. Take a look at all the events the Office of Sustainability is putting on this month - mark your calendars so you can attend and participate!

 

Sustainability Scavenger Hunt 

Join us on an eco-adventure exploring campus for our Sustainability Scavenger Hunt! We’ve asked you to find specific features around campus that highlight sustainable practices at Chapman. The form to submit your findings will be open from October 9 to October 27. Your submission will then be entered into a raffle to win a special prize. Good luck searching, Panthers!

Sustainability Trivia @ Contra Event 

Join us in celebrating Sustainability Month by playing some trivia for the chance to earn a discount on your drink! The event will take place at Contra Coffee and Tea (115 N Orange St, Orange, CA) on Wednesday, October 18 from 11:30am - 1:30pm. See you there! 

 

Ecolympics 

Ecolympics is back, this time at Chapman Grand! Residents of each floor will compete in a race to reduce electricity usage. The competition will take place from mid-October through mid-December, and the floor that reduces their electricity usage the most will win. Each resident on the winning floor will receive a $50 amazon gift card, so do your part Panthers! Check out some of the fliers hanging in Chapman Grand to learn about what you can do to reduce electricity usage in your apartment.

Wellness Festival Resource Event 

Join us in the Piazza on Monday, October 16th from 12:00-2:00 pm for this event put on by Chapman's Wellness and Recreation Group. Learn more about the Office of Sustainability and our resources to support your environmental well-being! 

 

Sustainability Microcredential Program for Faculty and Instructors 

The Sustainability Microcredential Program encourages Chapman University faculty and instructors to consider multiple ways to reduce paper usage by leveraging Chapman resources, the Canvas platform, and external applications. This online training course is asynchronous, with opportunities for virtual drop-in support. Learn more about the program here!

Where’s All the Antarctic Sea Ice? Annual Peak is the Lowest Ever

Seasonal sea ice is an important component in protecting the continental ice shelf as well as sustaining wildlife in Antarctica. With a rise in global temperatures, sea ice levels are decreasing, this year reaching a peak for lowest sea ice ever recorded by the National Snow and Ice Data Center. In comparison to other winter averages, this year’s sea ice levels were far from typical, posing potential risk to wildlife such as penguins as well as adding to the negative feedback loop of climate change. Local Forces are Leading the Way in the Global Warming Crisis

Experts on climate change and democracy discuss the challenges democratic institutions face in addressing the urgent issue of climate change. They emphasized the increased frequency of extreme climate events and the inadequacy of governments in adapting and providing protection. Read this article to hear about how local political forces encourage change and climate advocacy to face climate change. Local groups are encouraging empowerment through local citizen self-organization rather than waiting for a change to be made by the central government.  

In Shipping, a Push to Slash Emissions by Harnessing the Wind

Some shipping companies are harnessing new energy strategies to power their cargo ships without using fossil fuels. Multiple sail designs have been created and used to shift towards using wind rather than fossil fuels during their voyages. The International Windship Association is working towards expanding their strategy for wind assisted voyages to include over 10,000 cargo ships by 2030.
