Warneet jetties Project

Community Update

Issue 1 - April 2024

Warneet North Jetty

Experienced contractors now invited to prepare tenders to build the new Warneet jetties

Following the launch of concept plans in late 2021 and significant detailed design and planning steps, we are now entering the exciting construction tendering process. Following receipt and evaluation of tenders, we will select a suitable construction partner.

This project will replace the old structures with brand-new jetties, enhancing the area's appeal and safely supporting fishing, boating and other on-water activities people enjoy at Warneet’s waterside.

Jetty designs

Public piers and jetties are some of Victorians favourite places for fishing, boating, and enjoying time in nature, and the project will provide the community with safe and accessible facilities for people to enjoy.

As part of the Warneet Boating Precinct Plan (2021), Better Boating Victoria developed a set of designs for the jetties, which have been finalised and cost estimates prepared by Parks Victoria over the past months.

Parks Victoria has also developed an alternative option for jetty designs which are included as part of the tender package. The alternative option has been provided to ensure at the completion of the tender phase, the project can be delivered within current market conditions and is well-placed to progress to construction as quickly as possible.

Key design elements of the jetties include a pontoon for Warneet South Jetty and a low landing for Warneet North Jetty. During the planning stages, we’ve heard strong community support for safety.

Accordingly, both jetties will feature handrails and solar lighting to allow use at night and early in the morning. Lighting installations have been designed to illuminate the pier walkway for pedestrian safety while minimising impact on underwater life.

As part of the tender process, we are preparing design drawings which we will share with you soon to give a clearer impression on how the new jetties will look. In the meantime, read on for an explanation about the key differences between the jetty designs.

Warneet South Jetty

Designs for Warneet South Jetty

Both designs include a 200-metre-long jetty which is wider than the existing jetty, with steel piles, handrails, solar lighting and a floating pontoon. The alternative option proposes an attractive timber deck and a smaller pontoon which will reinstate the jetty’s berthing capacity. The initial design includes a concrete deck and provides increased berthing capacity.

Both designs include a jetty which is wider than the existing jetty, with steel piles, handrails, solar lighting and a low landing. The initial design proposes 76-metre-long jetty, with a timber deck on timber substructure. The alternative option proposes a jetty the same length as the current structure, with decking made of sturdy fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) mesh on a durable steel substructure.

Project stages

The project schedule is outlined below, and we look forward to sharing the final stages of the timeline once the lead construction partner is appointed later in 2024.

Fishing and boating access

Due to advanced deterioration, the jetties are currently both closed to pedestrians and for berthing access. Public berthing is available at Tooradin Jetty and Hastings Pier, both popular spots for fishing.

Communicating with stakeholders and the community

As the project progresses, we’ll continue to update stakeholders and the community via e-newsletters and regularly update the project webpage.
