In Case You Missed It

  • Faculty Mentorship/Student Help: The Division of Research has an established process for matching research residents and medical students with faculty members for research opportunities. These opportunities are to be strictly for volunteer work done by the student. Specifics on task work is completely up to the faculty member’s discretion. If you are interested in mentoring, please fill out this Qualtrics survey.
  • NIH Scientific Data Sharing Website: Whether you are involved in an NIH-funded project and want to understand which sharing policies apply to your research and how to comply, or you are a researcher looking to access scientific data from NIH-affiliated repositories, this site is for you. | More information
  • Department of Surgery Intranet Site: Funding Opportunities, Cultural Complications/Grand Rounds/Quality Minute presentations, Surgery Sparks of Gratitude, Global Surgical Programs, Finance/Reimbursement links, DOS Phone list, and resources for logos/fonts/templates. | More Information
  • Abstract Deadlines and Meeting List: List is updated weekly. | More Information

SurPASS Tip of the Month

Updates to Finding NIH Funding Opportunities and Information

New targeted funding opportunities will only be posted in Grants.gov, a federal-wide portal for discretionary funding opportunities, starting on October 1, 2025 (NOT-OD-25-143). The NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts will continue to be used for policy and informational notices, but will not include funding opportunities.

Beginning October 1, 2025, search for NIH funding opportunities at Grants.gov and click on Search for Grants, then Classic Search. In the filters found on this page, you can choose the Agency as the Department of Health and Human Services, then further filter to the NIH.

Please contact Lynn Cummings with any questions!

IRB Update: Amendments for Registration and Exempt Projects

The MCW IRB recently updated guidance on when amendments are required for Exempt and Registered/FLEX projects. Only substantial revisions—such as changes to project design, procedures, populations, recruitment, consent processes, or funding—should be submitted as amendments. Administrative or minor revisions (e.g., minor eligibility clarifications, data storage location changes within MCW platforms) do not require IRB submission, though teams may file a note-to-file if desired. If administrative-only amendments are submitted, they will be returned with instructions for withdrawal.
