🎄 Welcome to our December bulletin 🎁

As the term ends, I hope you take a well-deserved break to unwind, relax and recharge. Take a moment to savour the simple pleasures, be it a captivating novel, the company of cherished friends and family, or the exploration of a hobby that brings you joy. The next stage of your academic journey holds exciting challenges, and your well-deserved break is the fuel that will propel you forward.

Whatever you do with your time away from your studies, I hope you enjoy every moment and come back in 2024 ready and raring to tackle your assessments and the new term.

🏛️Campus information

The University will be closing for Christmas after Friday 22 December, and will re-open for normal business on Tuesday 2 January. Between these times there may be limited opening hours for many facilities and services. If you are staying in Exeter over the festive period this page has lots of useful Christmas information such as the Christmas Day lunch(need to book in advance), the opening times for food outlets, study spaces and sports opportunities available through the break.

📚Study Support

The Forum Library is open 24/7 over the Christmas break. If you want to take a break did you know that there are games in the library and they have a Christmas reading list. This has links to what's on in Exeter and on campus, as well as festive films, reading and even festive jokes.

And remember you can also make use of the writing feedback via Studiosity and there is plenty of guidance and advice on Citethemright.

🙌Celebrate!👏

Centenary Photo Winners

7 December 2023 was our Birthday and we asked you to capture your day in a photograph for a Centenary competition. You might remember most of the day was really drizzly, but then at the end of the day the sun popped out for some lovely sunshine. There was a great variety of pictures, from study areas to sunsets. Five winners were chosen by the judges and you can see them in our gallery below. Congratulations to Jasmeet Brar, Lori Moideen, Fang Yiying, Emilia Hanusiak and Anna Burma who each win £50 in vouchers.

🌎Human Rights Day

Students and academics have been very involved in activities marking Human Rights Day. Dr Louise Loder, Lecturer in Law and Director of Skills, Prizes & Alumni Engagement in the Law School, visited the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. She attended a very special event marking Human Rights Day and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Read more on our news page here.

Very ornate gold coloured vaulted room with wall lamps and ceiling chandeliers. There is a person on a raised platform addressing a group of people who are sat down. There are also chairs and a lecturn on the raised area. A screen in the foreground is part of the presentation and displays the date 7 December 2023.

HRDF, the Human Rights and Democracy Forum and ECIL, the Exeter Centre for International Law organised a poster competition to mark three important anniversaries. The winner was Alex Cumming. You can read the story behind the design and see it in full on our website here.

Blue poster featuring various graphics associated with the title 'Time is Ticking' including map, scales of justice, court and judges, people holding flags, heart, tank, handcuffed hands, a dove holding a flag, large clock face with the United Nations logo in the centre. Wording includes 'Women Rights', 'Slow targeted Westernised Costly', ICC. graphic of group of people with Black Lives Matter banner, Stop sign, and a sign saying Children at Work. Wording in a box at the bottom being held by hands ; Time is ticking. We are not doing enough. Time stands still: 1948 to Now. The promises of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights echo through the decades, but have we truly progressed? As the clock ticks from Article 1 to 12, it is a stark reminder that injustice persists. We must work together to change the future. #UDHRtimeforchange.
