MEMBER PROFILE

Meet Aimee Van Der Veer

Occupation: Dietitian

What are your professional interests/specialties?

Diabetes, Health at Every Size (HAES) and the Non Diet Approach

Tell us, where are you from and how did you get to be a Dietitian in the Midwest-Gascoyne region?

I grew up in a small coastal suburb on the Central Coast in NSW. I chose to do a year-long rural placement for my final year of uni and fell in love with smaller coastal towns, however ended up in Sydney, followed by Adelaide for my first job in dietetics. I quickly realised the city life wasn’t for me so applied for some positions across rural Australia and being in Adelaide at the time, WA was the next stop on my rotation around Aus! Balancing my quest for a rural location that also had surf led me to accept a position in Geraldton.

What do you love about the Midwest-Gascoyne?

The Midwest-Gascoyne region is a really special place and I’ve been really lucky to see so much of it already. Being a nature person, I have been blown away at the vast landscapes across the seasons, flying across red dirt and bush out to the Murchison region, coral reefs and crystal water, fields of gold when the canola is flowering and all the wildflowers. It is all very untouched and everyone you meet is incredibly friendly and generous with their time.

Did you always want to be a Dietitian Why?

For most of my life I had no idea what I wanted to do! But I knew I wanted to do something I was passionate about. I thought about this, and realised health and nutrition was a big passion of mine. I had a family friend who was a dietitian and I had a chat to her about what a career in dietetics looks like. After that I was sold on it! I am also a people-person and it brings me so much joy to play a part in hearing someone’s story and supporting them to develop a better relationship with food and improve their health.

What are your passions?

I am passionate about having a positive and valuable impact in everything I do. I love people and I hope that spills into the way I interact with and care for people within and outside of my work. I also love the ocean, camping and travel and I hope that guides the way I care for these places.

When you aren’t working, where will we find you?

I love anything in the ocean. I grew up surfing and over the years have expanded this into freediving and spearfishing. Most days I’m in the water 2-3 times a day. So, whether around town or camping up this beautiful coastline, you’ll find me with wet hair and covered in zinc 😊
