Unplanned Good Amicus Brief arrives at the US Supreme Court!Dear Friends of Unplanned Good: Here is a supplemental newsletter to share an exciting development for our organization! I just received the attached from our Boise-based counsel. It’s an Amicus (Friend of the Court) Brief filed with the United States Supreme Court.
From the Brief:
The legal case is First Choice Women’s Resource Centers v. New Jersey Attorney General Platkin. The issue is whether the NJ AG can demand the Women’s Center’s donor list and volunteers names. The Amicus Brief asserts that this violates their First Amendment rights. The Women’s Center argues that this should be an issue for Federal (not State) courts, and the case will be heard by the US Supreme Court later this year. In our Amicus Brief, Unplanned Good stands with First Choice and many nationally prominent organizations in asserting our First Amendment right to freely associate with others without fear of reprisal. Importantly, Unplanned Good educated the Supreme Court on our mission and interest in supporting birth mothers and advancing adoption through our tireless advocacy. At the left is a snippet from the Brief; it's our introduction which explains our interest in this case and why we want it decided correctly by the Supreme Court. Here’s a link to the Supreme Court case that lists the other organizations who've submitted briefs, including Heartbeat International, Care Net, the State of Florida and 18 other States, the Christian Legal Society, Save the Storks, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Pacific Legal Foundation. It's an honor to be included among these esteemed national organizations. I am grateful for the assistance of our counsel Preston Carter in the Boise law firm Givens Pursley LLP.
