Global Health Elective Reflection - By Dr. Ian Ridge - HUE Fellow

My global health elective to Ethiopia was a transformative experience to partner with the organization, World Medical Missions. Their assistance was invaluable in facilitating an academic enrichment experience to observe surgical care in an under- resourced setting. I was invited to teach and learn from local orthopedic surgeons. Their sense of community extended to the local medical professionals, who worked closely together to provide the best possible care for their patients. Their dedication and resourcefulness in the face of challenging circumstances were truly inspiring as I gain an appreciation for high quality surgical care at a low cost.

Learning in a resource-poor community required me to think critically, adapt, and make the most of the limited resources available to us. This often meant finding creative solutions to medical challenges and learning to prioritize care based on the resources at hand. It was a humbling experience that taught me the importance of flexibility and resourcefulness in the field of medicine.

The Ethiopia-based elective was a profound and rewarding experience that reaffirmed my commitment to service and education. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of meaningful global engagement and look forward to continuing to contribute to strengthening global surgery capacity in the future.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Efforts

Advancing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

During the Pipeline to Orthopaedic Surgery Outreach Program, Committee Members met with 8th graders at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School. During the month of January the topic was Sports Medicine. We reviewed career opportunities and roles in Sports Medicine with a particular focus on Athletic Training.  We had 4 athletic trainers lead a discussion about their roles in sports medicine and then demonstrate in small groups splinting and taping of various joints and body parts.  The students were provided opportunities to practice on each other.

During the month of February the topic was Research. We lead a discussion about research in orthopedics and provided education about the scientific process.  We reviewed the definitions of a clinical question and hypothesis.  The students were then able to rotate through 4 stations in which they conducted experiments.  These experiments included how balance is affected by closing their eyes, how high they can jump from standing versus running, etc.  Students were able to answer their clinical questions as a group after conducting their research.

Cultural Celebrations: Ramadan from March 10 – April 9
MCW’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is proud to celebrate Ramadan with our providers, employees, students and patients.

Ramadan is one of the holiest months of the year for Muslims.  This year, Ramadan takes place from March 10th – April 9th.  During this time, Muslims fast from food and drink from sunrise to sunset as a means to draw closer to God and cultivate self-control, gratitude and compassion for those less fortunate.  At sunset, the fast is broken with a meal with friends, family and the community.  Pregnant or nursing women, the sick, elderly people and children are exempt from fasting.

How to exchange Ramadan greetings:
Ramadan Kareem – Which in Arabic translates into “Have a generous Ramadan.”
Ramadan Mubarak – Which roughly translates into “Happy Ramadan.”
Eid Mubarak – On the last day of Ramadan, which is Eid-al-fitr, and roughly translates to “Blessed festival” or “Blessed feast.”

Ramadon Mubarak to all individuals in the MCW Community who celebrate this holy month!
