I know that the reality is, however, that some of you are experiencing tremendous challenges right now as a result of the spread of the coronavirus. Our faculty and staff truly do think of our extended SoC family every day. Chapman University is here for you, and so is the School of Communication. If you are unsure of what resources are available or how to access any information or support that you need, feel free to contact me directly and I will put you in touch with the right person or office. To help stay connected, we have been sending weekly newsletters spotlighting what the School of Communication is doing to support our students and faculty as well as the good news that continues to flow. Our students and professors are having papers accepted for publication, winning awards and fellowships, and are looking ahead to their plans for the 2020-21 school year. Classes are going well and our award-winning instructors continue to engage students in their courses. Our students continue to interview for jobs and we’ve even had reports of a few offers during this period! Many are learning important real-world lessons as their internships shift to remote work. I am so grateful for the resources we have in place that have ensured students’ ability to succeed professionally even under these circumstances: Our business and professional communication curriculum that includes remote interview instruction, specialized LinkedIn use training, and online networking skills; the career coaching and services provided by Chapman’s Career and Professional Development Center, as well as our own career advisor Nance Rosen; and our outstanding faculty who encourage professionalism and career planning in their courses. Even in adversity, we continue to keep the Chapman Experience alive and well. As the news becomes increasingly positive for plans to “reopen” California, we are going to return this newsletter to a monthly format. In the meantime, please be sure to follow Chapman University School of Communication on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram for news and announcements. I want to thank Rachael Daniels, SoC Development and Parent Engagement Coordinator, for managing our social media and her great efforts to get the word out about what’s happening in the School of Communication. In addition, the University continues to keep anyone who is interested informed on how it is managing this situation. Be sure to check the Chapman Coronavirus Updates website for the latest announcements and guidance, as well as your email. Continue to focus on the positive and know how much we miss every opportunity to see our students and supporters in person. We are much closer to the day that can happen again. If you need anything in the meantime that I might be able to help with, don’t hesitate to contact me directly. Jennifer Jennifer H. Waldeck, Ph.D. SCC 400 Students Have to Rethink the 2020 Rethink Campaign“We are so proud of our SCC 400 (Message Design II) students! Three weeks ago, they had to eliminate all of their on-campus events for the Spring 2020 Rethink campaign and adapt it for our new completely virtual campus environment. They even modified their messaging to meet the needs of their peers, focusing all of their messages for Week One on ‘staying positive’ during these stressful and uncertain times. They developed an entirely new social media strategy, and have been so creative and tirelessly positive about the work they had to do. I am so excited for everyone to see what the Spring 2020 SCC 400 class has been working on.” – Assistant Dean Sara LaBelle Faculty Promotion and TenureAll You Ever Wanted to Know (and Probably More) Every spring, the Provost of Chapman University announces faculty tenure and promotion decisions. You may have heard these terms, but what do they really mean? What is “tenure”? And how do professors get “promoted?” Acting Dean, Dr. Jennifer Waldeck, answers these questions. Showing Your Virtual Chapman SpiritThough we can't be together in person, we can be together in our Chapman spirit. Students geared up for class last week and showed their Chapman spirit. You can show your Chapman spirit in your next online meeting or class with these Chapman virtual backgrounds.
