All the latest news from Women's Property Initiatives Update November 2022Big Housing Build Regional Round As we rapidly approach the end of the year, I wanted to provide a quick update on some very exciting news for WPI. We will acquire nine new homes in Ballarat and Hepburn in 2024. These one and two bedroom homes are located in thriving communities in central Victoria. They are funded by Homes Victoria as part of the $5.3 billion Big Housing Build and will be delivered in partnership with Hygge Property, the Jack and Ethel Goldin Foundation and the Hupert Family Foundation. Homes Victoria has awarded $219 million in grants to 17 Community Housing Agencies to build more homes in regional Victoria. We are thrilled that these properties represent the first nine of the 25 homes we aim to deliver through our 25 Homes Campaign, providing the foundation for happy and healthy lives. In light of the chronic need for affordable rental housing in regional centres like these, WPI is looking forward to opening the doors to five one bedroom and four two bedroom dwellings across two developments to vulnerable women in these communities. Please read on for some other updates on key projects. Annual Report 2022 Last week we held our Annual General Meeting and released our Annual Report for 2022. Please read for updates on our people, projects and partnerships. The Ian Potter Foundation We are thrilled to announce that Women's Property Initiatives has been awarded significant multi-year funding from The Ian Potter Foundation, one of Australia's major philanthropic foundations. The Foundation supports and promotes a fair, healthy, sustainable and vibrant Australia. The Foundation has a rich history of funding organisations that help vulnerable members of the community to overcome challenging circumstances. Split over the next 3 years, this incredible funding will play a vital role in helping us to deliver more secure and affordable homes for women and children at risk of homelessness. Thank you to The Ian Potter Foundation for helping us to deliver homes that provide a foundation for happy and healthy lives.
Val's Story “I was born in Carlton. I'm an inner-city person. I didn't have any siblings so it was just me and my parents, and we were really close-knit. I cared for my parents in South Melbourne until they both passed away, and then I moved to country Victoria. I’d found myself in dire straits financially, and had to find a home quickly, but my choices for housing were very limited. When I found out that I could move into an apartment in Nightingale Evergreen I was ecstatic. We were expecting it to be ready in late 2020. I thought I could bear where I was living until then. But then COVID hit and it was an absolute nightmare for two and a half years. I was very isolated in the regional town where I'd ended up. I was living in a tiny room. I was financially strapped because the only income I had was the aged pension, and my rent was expensive. I got very depressed. I’d found myself in dire straits financially, and had to find a home quickly, but my choices for housing were very limited. I moved into my apartment in July. I’m just so blessed, I feel like I’ve been given a second chance in life. Image credit: Kate Longley Story: Nightingale Housing |
