We're changing the road layout on St Johns Street next week

An update on the Woolston Village Upgrade

Kia ora from Woolston Village Upgrade team.
It’s week two of construction and works are progressing steadily. Next week our drainage teams are switching to the other side of St Johns Street, which will temporarily restrict access to the supermarket. We're also starting night works along Ferry Road. We understand parts of this work are disruptive and we'll do our best to cause the least possible impact to your community.
Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding while we upgrade Woolston Village.

What's happening next week

Supermarket access and St Johns Street works

From Monday 3 August, you won’t be able to access the supermarket from St Johns Street, as our drainage crew have switched sides of the road to lay the new wastewater pipes.

You can still access New World from Ferry Road or Glenroy Street.

Traffic will be directed up the left-hand lane of St Johns Street and there will be clear detours in place to show you where to go.

This will be in place for six weeks.

Night works on Ferry Road

From Monday 9 August, we’ll start night works along Ferry Road. This is because we’re lining the lateral wastewater pipes that cross Ferry Road. To keep people safe, we need to restrict pedestrian access between Oak Street and Around Again Cycles between 7pm and 7am. Access to the Oak n Ferry and Super Liquor will still be available off Oak Street. We'll keep two-way vehicle traffic open both ways along Ferry Road at all times.

What we’ve done so far

- Installed a new manhole at the intersection of St Johns Street and Ferry Road
- Laid a section of the new sewer pipe away from the new manhole east along Ferry Road
- Inspected the manhole and sewer sub-main in the footpath on the southern side of Ferry Road
- Inspected some lateral pipes (smaller pipes that connect each property to the sewer main) between Around Again Cycles and Stitch In Time. We do this to ensure we can repair these pipes using the non-invasive lining technique, rather than trenching, which can be more disruptive.
- Excavated some potholes along the length of Ferry Road, to check the location of underground services so Council’s design team can make changes before construction works start in those areas.

Some of this inspection work has been difficult – we’ve discovered a thick layer of concrete underneath the asphalt in some areas, which means inspecting services takes longer and is more disruptive in terms of the noise and time spent outside businesses.

Jackhammering

Hard work: jackhammering through concrete so inspection works can take place

Love Woolston, park local

Parking on Ferry Road will be removed during construction to allow space for the new road layout and wastewater upgrade. Here are some alternative options for parking in the Village:

Portman Street
Free  public parking is available in the upgraded Council parking facilities off Portman Street behind the Woolston Community Library.

Glenroy Street
We've had approval to put a temporary walkway from Glenroy Street to the Library carpark, which will be open from 9am - 5pm weekdays. We're aiming to open this walkway in the next few weeks and will notify you when this is available.
