After two years of a pandemic freeze on off-campus excursions, the buses are coming and going almost daily from the School. These trips are often some of the most memorable moments for a student: I am sure parents remember them from their own time at school. At CHS, we are lucky to have vast opportunities to enhance student learning with a short bus ride.
Bussing has been a community topic for several years. Many have expressed a desire for the School to organize a bussing system to assist in transporting students to and from school each day. While the cost and logistics (parking, hiring drivers, scheduling) are currently beyond the school’s capacity, it is an option continuing to be investigated.
One aspect of bussing we can tackle is what is required for athletics. While there are days when the School could use a fleet of buses, we are tackling the purchase of a bus dedicated to athletics. Today, I want to update you on this initiative, the fundraising effort behind purchasing a bus, and the progress toward its delivery.
Tuition covers the day-to-day costs of the athletics program, including busing for regional competitions. The School believes athletics are a vital part of the education program—not an add-on. We strive to operate this program without charging parents incidental fees, but significant enhancements require additional funds.
The Annual CHS Golf Classic, a testament to our community's unwavering support, has bolstered the CHS athletics program and its facilities for the past two years. With its raffle ticket proceeds earmarked for the bus purchase, the 125 Celebration Event in November further exemplifies our community's commitment. The golf silent auction platform (Givergy) went live earlier today, offering the option to direct donations (Fund A Need) toward purchasing the electric bus. We are deeply grateful for the community’s generosity and hope the golf tournament on Friday, May 31 at the University Golf Club will bring us even closer to our goal.
Regarding the bus selection, we are fortunate to have community members with expertise in this area. Additionally, other ISABC colleague schools shared their experiences with various buses. We considered three electric and one diesel bus, evaluating battery life, available rebates, and suitability. An electric bus has been selected and will be customized to our specifications.
Sustainability is essential for our school community, and choosing an electric bus reflects our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint. By selecting an electric bus, we enhance our athletics program and contribute to a more sustainable future. Demand for electric vehicles is high, and since buses are made to order, we expect delivery next spring. When it is put into service for the athletics program, we will better equip this program and advance our sustainability goals simultaneously.
