MicroCreds at the University of Galway Micro-credentials, an exciting new HEA funded project at the University of Galway has been established. The Centre for Adult Learning & Professional Development has worked with enterprise, academic staff and industry representatives to identify skills gaps for current and future needs of the Irish workforce. As a result, a suite of upskilling and reskilling, short industry-led learning opportunities have been developed. There is a wide range of MicroCreds on offer, covering topics relating to climate change, digital upskilling, humanities, and European language for business. Battle ready - further discoveries about the Noble False Widow: A team of scientists from the Ryan Institute at the University of Galway has found that not only is the venom of the Noble False Widow much more potent than any of the common Northern European spiders they tested, but the spider is also able to adapt its attacking behaviour to prevail in different battle scenarios. The study by Dr Michel Dugon, Dr John Dunbar, Aiste Vitkauskaite, and Sean Rayner shows Noble False Widow spider venom is 230 times more potent than that of native spiders. Never too late: On Monday, our University recognised one of the oldest graduates to have attended a conferring ceremony. Frank Feely, a retired teacher and politician, completed a Bachelor of Arts in History, Irish and English in the late 1950s but did not have the opportunity to attend his graduation ceremony. Mr Feely was welcomed to the stage by Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh to be recognised and celebrated alongside his granddaughter, Tara Savage, who was conferred with a Bachelor of Arts. Letters to John McGahern: Dr Barry Houlihan (Library) wrote an article in The Irish Times about a new archive of letters to John McGahern now available at the Library Archives, including some from Seamus Heaney, John Updike, Jennifer Johnson, Eavan Boland and Mary Lavin. Educating our adolescents: With the number of children on sex charges doubling in the last decade, Dr Kate Dawson (School of Psychology) talks to the Sunday Times (subscriber only) about the new Active Consent* programme Sex on our Screens, which aims to educate adolescents about pornography. Impact of Lyme disease: Since contracting Lyme disease five years ago, Dr Manus Biggs (Biomedical Engineering and CÚRAM) has experienced severe neurological disorders including vision impairment. Dr Biggs spoke to The Irish Times about the difficulty in getting a diagnosis and the severity of symptoms. New osteoporosis screening and testing strategies: University of Galway clinicians, computer scientists and engineers, led by Dr Attracta Brennan, Professor John Carey and Associate Professor Mary Dempsey, are using enhanced x-ray technology to measure bone density in people across Galway, Leitrim and Sligo to develop new osteoporosis screening and testing strategies for early identification of the condition in patients. More from Irish Medical Times. Triple negative breast cancer: CÚRAM researchers are exploring a potential new therapeutic approach for triple negative breast cancer treatment. Amir Abdo Alsharabasy, a CÚRAM doctoral candidate working in the laboratory of Professor Abhay Pandit, is working on the design of nitric oxide scavengers to form a new treatment for this aggressive form of breast cancer. SFI-IRC Pathway programme: Dr Eavan O’Dochartaigh (School of Humanities), Dr Alison Connolly (School of Physics) and Dr Jane Conway (School of Psychology) have secured funding as part of a new collaborative initiative between Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the Irish Research Council (IRC) to support Ireland’s emerging research talent.
