Using a simple set of magnets, researchers from Brown and MIT have come up with a sophisticated way to monitor muscle movements, which they hope will make it easier for people with amputations to control their prosthetic limbs. Read more.

 

Apply for OVPR Salomon Faculty Research Awards: proposals due 11/10

Salomon awards support excellence in scholarly work, funding projects up to $15,000. Open to all disciplines; preference for junior faculty building their research portfolio. Proposals (via UFunds) due 11/10/22 by 5 pm. Learn more and apply.

 

Technology Innovations

Now accepting applications: Brown Biomedical Innovations to Impact (BBII)
BBII is an accelerator fund supporting biomedical technologies with high impact potential to become attractive to industry partners and investors. Pre-proposals accepted now through Dec. 16. Learn about BBII or contact Karen Bulock for details.

RI broke ground on new state lab facility
On Oct. 24, Rhode Island broke ground for the construction of a seven-story building in Providence to house new RIDOH State Health Laboratories. Space will also be available for Brown’s life sciences labs and interested biotechnology companies.

Brown, Wexford Science & Technology bring new wet lab space to Providence
Wexford Science & Technology plans to transform 62,000 sq. feet of its Point 225 Providence building into wet lab research space. Brown plans to lease half of this space, while the remainder will be available for life sciences companies.

Notice of Data Sharing Policy for NIMH
This notice replaces the current NIMH Data Sharing Policy to align with the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing and to extend the policy to include HIV-related applications that involve human subjects research.

Clarification regarding DMP requirements for the AHRQ NRSA T32 program
The AHRQ Data Management Policy does not apply to the AHRQ NRSA T32 program and a data management plan is not required as part of the grant application.

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training
Brown’s BEARCORE RCR program is open to campus-based students and post-docs who are required to complete RCR training. BEARCORE is a multi-week, hybrid program that will run between March and April 2023. Registration is now open.

Providing consulting services? Forming a start-up?
Outside professional activities must be conducted in accordance with all applicable Brown policies. Review ORI's detailed guidance on how to conduct these activities.

Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)
If you receive an email or attachment from a research sponsor with CUI markings, contact the Export Control Team to discuss next steps. CUI requires special handling and storing.

Winter Break 2023 proposal submission schedule
Winter Break is longer than in prior years, and advanced planning at your department is encouraged. Brown's Jan. 9 reopening coincides with a busy NIH deadline. With the potential for high proposal volume that day, submit before Winter Break if possible.

*NEW* Department of Energy proposal requirement
DOE Office of Science Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) and DOE National Lab Announcements and other funding solicitations now require a Promoting Inclusive and Equitable Research (PIER) Plan as an appendix to the proposal narrative.

NSF FastLane website transition to Research.gov and Grants.gov continues
Please consult the tables in this document (PDF) for additional information about the transition to Research.gov, including dates throughout the fall when some programs will stop accepting proposals through FastLane.

Tutorials and guidance on how to use Research.gov
NSF is transitioning all preparation and submission functionality for new proposals from FastLane to Research.gov when the Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) (NSF 23-1) is effective in late January 2023. Learn more.

Final programmatic and technical report management
Successful close-out of sponsored projects most often concludes with submission of a final technical report. If routed via OSP to the sponsor, please forward to our office several days in advance of the due date to ensure timely submission.

Did you know that NRSA fellowships and institutional training grants allow for childcare costs?

Dept. of Health and Human Services/NIH operates under a Continuing Resolution
HHS, including NIH, operates under the Continuing Appropriations and Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act (Public Law 117-180), continuing government operations through Dec. 16, 2022, at the FY22 enacted level, with no reduction.
