From the MayorCouncil’s application for a special rate variation (SRV) to fund vital upgrades of community infrastructure has been approved in full by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART).
The SRV will address generations of under-investment in asset renewal due to low rate revenue per capita compared to other metropolitan councils, rising costs not met by the rate peg, and ongoing cost shifting from state and federal governments. We applied for the SRV after extensive community engagement on proposed rate increase options last yearwhich found overall support to improve local infrastructure. Thank you to everyone who shared their views throughout the consultation process. Council will consider the IPART approval at its meeting on 16 June before a final decision is made on the 2026/27 Delivery Program and Operational Plan. You can find out more on our website. This week, Council was also recognised at the prestigious NSW Local Government Awards for Excellence as finalists in four award categories. Our pioneering environmental initiative the Tiny Forest received a high commendation from the judges, and we were finalists for our work in transforming customer service on digital platforms, strengthening First Nations partnerships and promoting responsible pet ownership. Congratulations to all the Council staff, schools, community groups and businesses involved in these initiatives. Have a wonderful long weekend. Mayor Christine Kay
