Welcome to the Winter newsletter

Dear Alumni,

Welcome to the winter newsletter, which keeps you up to date with news, events and opportunities specifically tailored for alumni of the Schools of Education and Children, Young People and Families (and all educational courses prior to their formation).

It has been another busy year on campus and as always we are extremely proud of all the graduates who have recently started their careers in classrooms, nurseries, gone onto further study or are working in other educational settings. In addition, in July 2023 our Initial Teacher Education (ITE) provision was awarded a ‘good’ Ofsted rating. Read more.

The year ended with Primary School Teacher Daniel Callaghan (Primary Education, 2020) winning Silver in the New Teacher of the Year category at the Pearson National Teaching Awards 2023. Read more.

Advanced Practice in Speech, Language and Communication Needs

Leeds Trinity has worked in partnership with the Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust to develop a practice-based course designed to better meet the needs of children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).

The qualification has been developed in response to calls by educational leaders who need sustainable alternatives to help meet the complex SLCN in their schools by developing their own in-house provision.

Interested in studying this course from September 2024Find out more.

2024 Champions of Childhood Conference

The School of Children, Young People and Families (CYPF) warmly invites you to join them for their second Champions of Childhood Conference.

This free in-person event will include a range of insightful speakers and there will be thought-provoking discussions and opportunities to network.

The day will feature a range of sessions from speakers across different organisations. Roger Slee, the keynote speaker, is the Diamond Jubilee Chair of Disability and Inclusion in the School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds.

Schools History Project (SHP) 2024

The SHP has been part of Leeds Trinity since the early 80s and has established itself as a pioneering and influential institution in the History education community.

It recently appointed Dan Lyndon-Cohen as its new Director and is looking forward to hosting the annual summer conference in June 2024. Future events also include a New Teachers’ Conference (virtual) for primary and secondary History teachers (3 February 2024) and a SHP Understanding event bringing together academic historians with school history teachers to discuss teaching LGBTQ+ histories in school (date tbc).

Dan is really keen to hear from any Leeds Trinity alumni who are still involved in History education. He has produced a short survey to hear people’s thoughts about the Schools History Project which you can access here, or email Dan.

MA Childhood and Education December graduation successes

Programme Leader Jeff Potter tells us that after another successful year students have once again achieved great results. Some obtained their perfect jobs whilst completing the programme, whilst others are progressing to further study.

Evie Hudson (pictured above left), who received a distinction, began her studies in Primary Education QTS at Leeds Trinity University in 2019, being the first person in her family to go to university. She graduated with her teaching qualification in 2022 and progressed straight onto the MA programme. As well as being the Students' Union Postgraduate Students' Officer and a Student Ambassador, Evie obtained her first full-time teaching post in July, beginning work as a Year 4 teacher in September.

Beth Middleton (above right), who also received a distinction, travelled from Malton twice a week for evening lectures after a full day working in a Nursery as the Pre-School Room Leader. Beth achieved outstanding grades throughout the year and was awarded a mark of 92% for her Dissertation. Beth has now begun Early Years Teacher Training.
