Congratulations to our undergraduate students who were recently selected to present their research at the National Communication Association Conference this November! Kalya Slack ’21, Dylan Wen ’21, and, Lisa Matusi ’21 will present their paper “The influence of backdrop color on speaker credibility.” Nicolette Evans ’19 and Allie Ricci Fisher ’19 will present their paper “The impact of inclusive advertising: The effects on mood, body satisfaction, sense of representation, and purchase intention.” Nicolette and Allie's paper also received the Top Paper Award for Student Section.

Graduate Students Complete Capstones

Eight of our Health and Strategic Communication master’s students completed capstone last month! They presented their evidence-based intervention projects to HCOM faculty, and topics included a bone marrow donation website called Let's Get This Match, a social media college student mental health campaign focused toward Asian-American students called Be S.M.A.R.T., a suicide prevention training presentation for U.S. veterans and their families called Help on the Home Front, and a college instructors' student mental help resource website called CU Care. The students are now off to varying new adventures, including entering the Ph.D. program in Communication at the University of Delaware, and starting positions at the AdCouncil and the San Luis Obispo County Department of Health.

“What has benefited me most in my career is how I was “raised” to be a young professional by the School of Communication and Chapman University: sending hand written thank you notes after interviews, speaking up in meetings, putting forward innovative ideas, challenging the status quo, recognizing it’s okay for the status quo to continue for the time being, networking, volunteering in my community, seeking a life and career that align with my personal values.”
