What's On April 2013

Nigel Wilson discussing the artists work at Hullabaloo Art Space with Cromwell Primary students.
I trust you are all enjoying the beautiful autumn with its huge blue skies and golden scenes that make life look and feel a bit like a biscuit tin. The couple of frosts we have had are a potent reminder of what is just around the corner and they seem to put many of us into
‘hunter-gatherer’ mode - me included. There were thousands of people in Central over Easter to join in the fun at the Clyde Wine and Foods Festival. Once again, it was a huge success with crowds enjoying the sunshine, fresh local fare and delicious fermented grape juice. Others came for the swanky opening race meeting of Cromwell’s new and very high tech Motorsport Park. This is all so good for the region. There were so many people around that I truly wonder whether Central Otago has finally been discovered in a big way, and if so, what changes will this bring?
The Arts Trust and I have been all-consumed lately with seeking sponsorship for our 2nd Art Awards later this year, and we are delighted to announce that we have the Russell Henderson Charitable Trust as our principle sponsor. The Henderson family are well known in Alexandra for supporting the arts. For their belief in us, and with their generous contribution to us, the Art Awards will be held in October this year. We also welcome back Quartz Reef, Three Miners and New World as supporting sponsors and we thank them for their continued support of the 2013 awards. We are working hard to pull together the finer details of this
national art competition and can’t tell you everything yet except to say that the awards will be on and we have fantastic judges, so watch this space!
The other thing I have been up to is taking Cromwell school children on day trips around the Central Otago Arts Trail. It was such a worthwhile experience for the students to see the wealth of talent around their own area. I’m sure many of these students will have been totally inspired by the artists they visited. Arrowtown Autumn Festival starts tomorrow and features more than
50 events over the 10 day programme. See their website www.arrowtownautumnfestival.org.nz for more information.
On the 16th April the Southern Lakes Festival of Colour begins. This biennial celebration of the arts has grown from strength to strength and the organisers have a fantastic program this year, with a huge variety of entertainment. Check out their website www.festivalofcolour.co.nz for more information and bookings.
Have a good look below at all that is happening over this next month or so, there is plenty to choose from.
