Newsletter 7 - May 8, 2026

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have now been back at school for three weeks, and it has already been an incredibly eventful start to the term, with students representing our school with pride across a range of events and learning opportunities.

A particular highlight was our Interschool Swimming Team bringing home the championship trophy for the third year in a row. Congratulations to everyone involved - what an outstanding achievement! I know it came down to a very tense few relays to decide the final result, which made the win even more exciting.

A very special thank you and congratulations to Mr Clancy for his preparation and support for our swimming coach and the students. The opportunities our students receive makes such a difference, and we are very fortunate to have such a strong swimming program at Subiaco Primary School.

Hamersley Road Warden-Controlled Crossing
I am pleased to share that a new warden-controlled children’s crossing will be installed on Hamersley Road, near Union Street. This follows an application process initiated by our P&C several years ago, and we are very grateful for their advocacy and persistence in progressing this important safety initiative for our students and families.

Works are scheduled to commence on Tuesday 19 May and are expected to take approximately two weeks. During this time, families should expect some traffic disruption along Hamersley Road, which may also impact parking availability during drop-off and pick-up times. We ask for your patience and care around the school during the construction period.

As part of the project, six parking bays near the children’s crossing will be removed. Further along Hamersley Road, 16 new parking bays will be created. To allow for these additional bays, the median island at the existing Hamersley Road and Campbell Street crossing will be removed, along with two small trees at either end of that section of the street.

Once the new crossing has been installed and fully certified by WA Police, a traffic warden can be recruited and appointed. WA Police have advised that if there is someone from within the local area who is interested in the position, they may be able to assist in progressing the recruitment process more quickly.

Anyone interested in applying for the traffic warden position can contact WA Police directly at:
Traffic.Warden.State.Management.Unit@police.wa.gov.au
This is a positive step forward for student safety, and we look forward to seeing the new crossing in place.

Subi Blooms
A huge thank you to our Year 2 teachers, Nina Lewis, Marisha Burnside, Melissa Woodberry and Samara Tugwell, as well as Gemma Hayley and her Year 4/5 class, for their wonderful contribution to Subi Blooms.

Under the expert guidance and teaching of artist Emma Benichou, one of our wonderful parents, students painted 89 sheets of spectacular wrapping paper. These will be used to wrap 89 bouquets made from flowers collected after the City of Subiaco’s Subi Blooms Mother’s Day weekend display in the streets of Subiaco.

The bouquets will be prepared for our students to present to new mothers at King Edward Memorial Hospital on Monday 11 May. Six students from these classes, Penelope, Michael, Lauren, Zoia, Vivienne and Mila, will accompany me to KEMH on Monday afternoon, where we will be met by a journalist, photographer, City of Subiaco executives, KEMH nurses and doctors, and hopefully at least one newborn baby and their beautiful mum.

This is such a thoughtful and generous gesture, and we are very proud to be part of the Subi Blooms Mother’s Day celebrations. The students’ artwork is absolutely beautiful.

Mother’s Day Celebrations
One of the great joys of my week has been visiting classrooms and seeing the creative artwork happening across the school in preparation for Mother’s Day. The children have been exploring ideas, experimenting with colour, shape, line, texture and space, and using a range of materials and techniques to create something personal and meaningful for the special people in their lives. These experiences are closely aligned with the Visual Arts curriculum, where students learn to represent ideas, experiment with different art elements, and use materials, media and processes such as painting, drawing, printmaking and mixed media to create artworks.

I also loved visiting each of the Pre-primary classes for their Mother’s Day celebrations throughout the week. It was beautiful to see mums and children singing, dancing, playing games, painting, and sharing the most amazing handmade cards and gifts.

A personal highlight was visiting Mrs Hewson’s class, where I discovered children decorating iced biscuits using what looked very much like textas! Much to the children’s delight, they very proudly explained to me that they were edible texta pens. It was such a gorgeous moment and a lovely example of the joy, creativity and excitement that filled our classrooms this week.

To all of our mothers, grandmothers, carers and special people in our children’s lives, I wish you a very beautiful Mother’s Day. I hope you are celebrated, appreciated and spoilt by the people who love you most.

Warm Regards
Heather McNeil

Creative Schools Program – Back Again in 2026!

Subiaco Primary School is excited to be one of ten schools selected to participate in the 2026 Creative Schools program, delivered by FORM – Building A State of Creativity. This will be our second year in the program.

This year, the program will take place in Mr Cornez’s Year 5 classroom and Miss Woodberry’s Year 2 classroom across Terms 2 and 3. Over 16 weeks, classes will engage in a creative learning journey, where classroom teachers collaborate closely with professional creative practitioners to co-design and deliver engaging, hands-on learning experiences that connect creativity with areas of the WA curriculum.

Mr Cornez’s class will be working with Anne Gee, who is a Perth-based artist and former educator with over 30 years of experience in teaching and school leadership. Her work spans illustration, paper sculpture, and large-scale public art, often inspired by storytelling, memory, and the natural world.

Miss Woodberry’s class will be working with Elly Sumner, who is a multidisciplinary artist specialising in costume design, visual arts, and creative workshops. With international experience working on Broadway and the West End, Elly brings a wealth of creative expertise, particularly in construction, design, and large-scale artistic projects. Her work now spans murals, clothing, and community-based art initiatives.

A key focus of the program is developing the Five Habits of Learning: Inquisitive, Imaginative, Persistent, Collaborative and Disciplined. These habits are embedded throughout the learning process, supporting students to think creatively, work effectively with others, and build resilience when faced with challenges.

We look forward to sharing our students’ learning and celebrating their creative achievements with the school community over the next two terms.

Fame Jnr the Musical

This Thursday, the Year 6 students accepted an invitation from Bob Hawke College to view their major theatrical production of the year.

The 2026 production was a musical titled Fame Jnr. As the name would suggest, the performance was based largely on the 1980s movie of a similar name...and it did not disappoint! All of the classic soundtrack hits form the movie original were recreated by the Bob Hawke students, who played their parts with aplomb.

Our students loved the performance, so let's hear some of them had to say about it.

It was amazing - Emma T

I believe this remake of Fame was better than the movie! - Jack

Today was a day that I will never forget. All the actors were amazing and so talented - Nathania

They had lots of emotion in their acting, it was just like reality - Chloe M

Our special thanks goes to Bob Hawke College Performing Arts teacher, Ms Georgie Perrott, and her team of staff for putting on such a wonderful production.

Subiaco Makes History With an Incredible Gold Division Three-Peat!

Subiaco Primary School has officially etched its name into the history books after achieving the unbelievable, the miraculous, the simply sensational Gold Division Three-Peat at the Inter-School Swimming Carnival!

Competing in the highest division against some of the strongest swimming schools around, our team of 35 superstar swimmers put on an absolutely phenomenal performance from start to finish. Every race mattered. Every point counted. Every cheer from the sidelines lifted the team higher and higher.

The competition was fierce all day long, with both Sorrento and Floreat pushing hard right to the very last events, constantly breathing down our necks and keeping the pressure on. But the Subi spirit stood tall once again. Through determination, teamwork, courage and heart, our swimmers dug deep and found another level when it mattered most.

From lightning-fast finishes to courageous swims, from relay brilliance to deafening team chants, it was a day packed with unforgettable moments that showcased everything that makes Subiaco so special.

A Massive congratulations must go to every single swimmer who represented our school with pride, sportsmanship and incredible effort. You were simply outstanding.

We also want to give an extra special shoutout to our amazing swim coach, Susanna. In an unbelievable display of dedication and care for our students, Suzanna actually ruptured her Achilles during our training block and somehow only missed ONE training session! She was back on pool deck, hobbling around on crutches, still coaching, encouraging and supporting the team every step of the way. That level of commitment says everything about the kind of person she is and how much she genuinely cares for our students and swimming program.

Susanna, we are so lucky to have you.

Congratulations again to our incredible swimmers, staff, supporters and families.

For our Kindy and Pre-primary children, the dark royal fleecy jackets are very warm and look great with marching track pants.
