Newsletter 6 - April 24, 2026

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

It was wonderful to welcome staff, students and community members back to school on Monday. Classrooms had a beautiful, calm energy as I walked around the school and this is a credit to how students embrace learning at Subiaco, the work by parents to prepare them for the day and staff; who focus on connection, collaboration and predictable routines.

I hope the holiday break was restful and enabled some quality family time ahead of the longer term. Although it is an 11-week term, we do have two public holidays this term and a Student Development Day on Friday 19 May just before the WA Day public holiday which will give families a four-day long weekend around the mid-way point of the term.

In this longer term and the change of season which can bring illness, I encourage families to pace extra-curricular activities to ensure students have enough rest and play outside of school to come to school each day ready to learn. We also ask families to
keep their child home if they are unwell to limit the spread of illness to staff and students.

ANZAC Service
This morning the school held its annual ANZAC Service with all students from Pre-primary to Year 6, staff, special guests Mr Richard Diggins, Justice of the Peace, Order of Australia Medal, member of the Subiaco RSL Sub Branch; Fiona Plant representing Jonathan Huston, MLA; City of Subiaco Mayor, David McMullen, Director of Development Services, Mr Alex Petrovski, School Board Chair, Mrs Christina Dismuke School Board Representative, Mrs Katherine Vines, P&C President and Mrs Johanna Van Gorkum-Derks.

Led impeccably by Year 6 students Porjai, Aria and Benit was a moving and special service which provided space to reflect on the importance of honouring the courage, sacrifice and service of those who have served in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions.

ANZAC Day began by commemorating the soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who landed at Gallipoli during World War I, and has since become a time to reflect on the values of bravery, mateship and resilience. For our students, ANZAC Day offers an opportunity to learn about an important part of Australia’s history, to show respect, and to recognise the many ways people contribute to peace and service across
the world.

Our choirs sounded amazing, giving everyone goosebumps I am certain.
It was one of those days that heightened my sense of pride in being the Principal of this outstanding school community.

Thank you so much to the community for attending. I also thank the many staff behind the scenes who spent hours supporting students to rehearse as speakers, preparing the wreaths for the service and with the help of the community bringing in flowers, which were just incredible.

2026 School Board
I am pleased to welcome our 2026 School Board members: Board Chair Christina Dismuke, parent representatives Katherine Vines, Joel Benichou and Fawzia Wilson, community member Simone Janney, and staff representatives Gemma Hayley and Cassie Zaddow.

The Board provides strategic oversight and governance, monitors progress against our Business Plan priorities and supports a number of key decisions involving annual contributions and charges to parents and dress code.

I thank both returning and new members for their time and commitment. Their contribution strengthens the direction and future planning of Subiaco. Thank you to outgoing Board Chair, Hannah McKelvie and staff representative Alan Ramsey, who both spent the past 3 years on the Board, and to Gabrielle Kotai-Qamar who spent 9 months with us. Thank you to each one of you for your significant and valued contributions.

Very soon you will be able to find all School Board members on the school website. Please say hello when you see a Board member in the community or at school.

Warm Regards
Heather McNeil

School Photo Day is Coming

Order EARLY for sibling photos
Sibling photos can ONLY be ordered online. Once you receive the personalised flyers for your children, it is imperative that you order your sibling photo early to avoid missing out! There is a physical limit in the school schedule to how many sibling photos can be taken. Once the maximum capacity of sibling orders has been reached, no more sibling orders can be placed.

Unless booked out prior, the website will close for sibling orders Thursday 7 May at midday. There are 65 spots left.

The school or the photographers cannot accept late orders for sibling photography. Please do not ask as your request simply cannot be accommodated.

Order EARLY for discount photo day prices
Order your photos up to 10 calendar days after photo day to receive discount photo day prices. Late orders are handled separately to the school delivery and incur a $30 custom service charge.

Other information
Kapture offer a money back guarantee for any parent who is not fully satisfied with their photo package. Should you have any queries before or after photo day, please check the FAQ’s on the Kapture website.

We request that students who are displaying signs of respiratory and / or gastrointestinal illnesses do not attend school specifically to be included in their class photo. Having students with communicable illnesses attend the photography venues puts other students, school staff and Kapture staff at risk – especially those that are already immunocompromised. Students who are unable to attend school photo day can book a studio appointment at our Malaga office to be photographed during school holidays. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

Your school will notify you in a few weeks when team and special group photos are available to view and purchase on the Kapture website. Please note; class, individual and sibling portraits are not available to view online prior to purchase.

All students will be photographed individually on photo day for school administration records AS WELL as included in their class group presentation available for purchase to all families. Should there be any reason why your child should NOT be included in the photo shoot –please contact the school office.

Sports Corner – Cross Country

Our Year 1 - 6 school Cross Country event will be held on Friday, 5 June, with the Year 3 - 6 Interschool Cross Country taking place on Wednesday, 17 June.

For students 10 - 12 years of age (born 2016, 2015, 2014) who are interested in attempting to qualify for the Western Australian state team, please note that this year's Interschool event does not align with this pathway. Students wishing to pursue this opportunity will need to compete in the Secondary Champion Schools Cross Country event on Thursday 21 May and nominate via the “INDIVIDUALS” link on that page prior to the Monday 18 May. www.schoolsportwa.com.au/interschool/secondary/cross-country/

If your child is intending to go down this pathway, please email me to let me know.

Interschool Cross Country 2026
This year we will be participating in the City Beach Primary School Interschool Cross Country Carnival located at City Beach Ovals on the Wednesday 17 June. Our top six boys and top six girls from each year group (Years 3 to 6) from our school event will represent the school on the day.

The reason we have changed interschool events is due to a number of scheduling clashes at the start of the term. Further details and timetable of our school Cross Country event will be shared closer to the date.

Scholastic Book Club

The Issue 3 Book Club brochures were distributed today. If you did not receive a brochure, check with your classroom teacher, or come and request one at the library.

There is no obligation to participate but if you would like to place an order the school library benefits from any purchases made.

Payment for orders can be made in one of the following ways:

Cash - If paying by cash or cheque please place the completed order form along with payment in an envelope with Student name and Class clearly marked on the front and drop your order into the red letterbox in the front office.

Credit card - If you would like to pay with a credit card please download the LOOP app or visit the LOOP website https://mybookclubs.scholastic.com.au/Parent/Login.aspx to register/login and make your payment. There is no need to fill out and return the order form to school.

All orders are due back to school by 3.30pm Friday 1 May.

If you would like to place an order for gifts you can collect the order from the library rather than having it delivered to your child’s classroom. Just put a note on your order so we know your preference.

For late orders placed after 1 May Scholastic will offer parents a home delivery option for an additional fee. Any items purchased this way will be delivered to a home address – not the school.
