Just 11 people have died from COVID in Taiwan, where the per capita infection rate is among the lowest in the world. A new study this week sought to find out how such a success story was possible while so many other countries continue to struggle to contain the pandemic. The findings shed light on which elements of the standard COVID response — testing, contact tracing and quarantines — really work.

Japan, meanwhile, is struggling. A fourth wave and sluggish vaccine rollout is threatening another delay to the Olympics and major cities such as Osaka are in a near state of emergency. And in India, fears are mounting that fresh lockdowns will be needed to curb spiralling infection rates.

And while shops and pubs are reopening in the UK, let’s be honest – walking is still the main social activity for a lot of us. I’ll be out for multiple strolls this weekend, same as most days over the past year. The good news is walking really is a great workout that benefits your heart, your bones and your muscles. So all those steps will put you in good stead for post-pandemic life.

David Cameron’s lobbying scandal won’t seem to go away in the UK. It’s a messy tale involving the former prime minister’s ties to Australian-farmer-turned financier Lex Greensill. Cameron says he hasn’t broken any rules. And, in fact, he’s right – which is exactly why we need to have another look at those rules.

Also this week, these weird giraffe-bird things, conflicted feelings about cows, and staying healthy during Ramadan fasting.
