From the Chair![]() Jodie Duignan-George May was small business month. A chance to recognise and celebrate the vital role small businesses play in driving our state's economy and enriching our communities. Small businesses contribute a considerable portion of employment in Cairns. While large employers play a significant role, small businesses remain a vital part of the local economy, contributing to job creation and economic diversity. A collaboration with the Regional School to Industry Partnership Program (RSIP), to bring together a variety of key industries, educators, government and providers was held in 2024. From that meeting, a number of initiatives occurred organically and others, intentionally. ![]() This week, we came together once again to foster collaboration and promote an ecosystem mindset focused on strengthening our region, workforce, and the future of Cairns. Meeting of the Minds #2 featured insightful presentations from The Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET), FNQ Vocational Academy (formerly SchoolTech), Cairns High School, Cairns Regional Council, Centacare, the Department of Defence, RSIP, and the Carins RJC. The event sparked valuable conversations, new connections, and fresh ideas around workforce development and skills for tomorrow. Thank you to all who attended and contributed. Teacher, mum of four and now author, Nikki Townley has drawn directly from her family’s real-life farming experience to create a story that helps kids understand how raw sugar is made. The book’s beautiful illustrations were created by Ukrainian artist Victoria Mikki, who brought the Aussie farm scenes to life. Queensland’s primary industries – agriculture, food, fisheries, and forestry – continue to be a powerhouse for our economy. Agribusiness is a major driver of the Cairns regional economy, generating over $1 billion each year. Thanks to the area's tropical climate, fertile soil, and strong supply chains, the region produces and exports raw sugar, live cattle, tropical fruits, seafood, and more. Covering nearly half the region—10,000 square kilometres—Cairns' agricultural land is ideal for diverse crops and the sector is evolving rapidly through groundbreaking innovation and smart technologies. From drones and robotics to data-driven farming and climate-smart practices, agriculture today is about working smarter, not just harder. AgTech is a priority investment area of Advance Queensland, reshaping the way we grow, harvest, and produce food across the state. This transformation is creating exciting new career paths, boosting sustainability, and attracting a new generation of tech-savvy minds to the land. A future where Queensland’s rich agricultural roots grow hand-in-hand with world-class innovation – proving that agriculture isn’t just about working the land, it’s about shaping the future. Since entering the market in 2019, the company has generated more than 12,000GWh of clean energy for Queenslanders, reinvesting its profits back into the state. One of CleanCo’s foundational assets is the Barron Gorge Power Station, located within the Barron Gorge National Park on Djabugay Country near Cairns. This hydroelectric station produces up to 66MW of reliable, renewable energy—rain or shine—by harnessing the natural flow of the Barron River, and when needed, water from Tinaroo Falls Dam. Water is captured at the Kuranda Weir and channelled underground to power two 33MW generators. Over the past year, Barron Gorge has seen more than $25 million invested into key infrastructure projects, engaging over 600 workers—most of them local contractors. The site’s team is committed to operating sustainably, minimising environmental impact, and working closely with the local community. Applications now open!
