Americans were confronted with yet another painful video showing a Black man being brutally beaten by police – this time Tyre Nichols was beaten in Memphis and died from his injuries three days later.

Rashad Shabazz, a scholar of African American studies at Arizona State University, wrote for us about the societal forces that could lead Black police officers to brutalize another Black man.

The officers involved were part of the elite SCORPION unit, encouraged to take an aggressive approach to stopping crime, explain Seth Stoughton and Ian Adams, who are former police officers and professors at the University of South Carolina. They highlight examples of these specialized squads going rogue and undermining public trust in policing since Prohibition.
