Spotlight On Our People

Andrew Ji

Qingxin (Andrew) Ji

Graduate Student, Applied Physics and Materials Science

I am a 3rd-year PhD candidate in Applied Physics, working with Professor Kerry Vahala. Before joining Caltech, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Peking University and was a SURF student at Caltech in 2019. Throughout my academic journey, I have been captivated by the intricate principles behind integrated photonic systems and their ever-expanding possibilities. My research focuses on pushing table-top high-precision optical systems onto a miniaturized chip, in collaboration with UCSB, JPL and NIST. To make contributions in this interdisciplinary field, I believe that it is important to learn from people on both the theory and application sides. When I'm not immersed in the world of photons, you will likely find me on the basketball court or tennis court. Please visit my homepage for further information!

Elif Oral

Postdoctoral Scholar, Mechanical and Civil Engineering

Hello! As a researcher, I am intrigued by the destructive power of the Earth, such that I work on understanding the physical mechanisms that drive earthquakes and related natural hazards. Specifically, I work in the junction of computational mechanics, fracture and soil mechanics, and theoretical and observational seismology. My background is civil engineering, which additionally motivates me to valorize physics-based knowledge to predict the consequences of future events and build resilient cities. Caltech is kind of the cradle of earthquake science and engineering. Working here, amongst the pioneers of many concepts in the field, has been inspiring for my research, and I continue to enjoy the rewarding feeling of pushing my expertise. Plus, when you are an earthquake scientist, living in Southern California becomes an awkward pleasure. Even though they sound scary, earthquakes are the architects shaping unique landscapes. You can find out more about my work here.

We'd like to feature you!

The Bill Gross Prize for Entrepreneurship

The Bill Gross Prize for Entrepreneurship awards prizes for undergraduate or graduate students who submit a business plan to launch a product, process, or a novel use for an existing technology. Students may apply as individuals or as members of a team. At the end of the mentorship period, each individual or team will present their business plan before a panel of volunteer judges from across the entrepreneurship community. Winning teams will split $100,000 and be considered for internships with Caltech-associated startups. Learn more and apply. Submission deadline: January 8, 2024.

RSI Ideation Grants - Call for Proposals

These grants are intended to fund scientists and engineers interested in translating their ideas and technologies into wider world impact, and potentially creating new ventures. These grants serve the Resnick Sustainability Institute's mission to advance global sustainability by addressing challenges and opportunities associated with climate change and the stewardship of natural resources. Ideation funding supports conceptualizing technology development, from early idea to kickstarting a business. Expenditure categories include; techno-economic/carbon lifecycle analysis; shared workspace & tech facility fees; industry visits & conferences; small equipment, materials & supplies; and business information. Rolling applications accepted through December 31, 2023. Learn more and apply.

2024 RSI Pioneer Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Resnick Sustainability Institute's (RSI) Pioneer Postdoctoral Fellowship recruits outstanding recent PhD graduates to pursue research and training in exciting areas relevant to sustainability at Caltech. This fellowship will afford researchers access to cutting edge facilities, training, and broad expertise in the science and engineering needed to tackle pressing challenges in sustainability. RSI anticipates making up to 3 awards and welcomes applicants with exceptional backgrounds in research and who are committed to diversity and creating an inclusive, equitable culture. Candidates must secure a commitment from one or more Caltech faculty members to serve as a mentor and to provide office/lab space for the fellowship. Mentors will be expected to provide a 50% cost-share for the fellowship. Application deadline: Friday, January 12, 2024. Learn more and apply.
