Announcing the Fall 2018 advising and NSOP schedule

June 28, 2018

Dear Advisers! We hope you are enjoying your summer so far.

While the sun is shining, we’re busy preparing for the arrival of our new students, the Class of 2022. According to the Beloit College Mindset list, these students were mostly born in 2000, have grown up with cell phones, do not remember 9/11, and think of Pokemon primarily as things to find as part of an interactive game.

We wanted to let you know about the schedule for Orientation 2018, so that you can make your arrangements if you plan on being on campus to welcome the Class of 2022.

  • Sunday, Aug. 26:   First-Years Move In
  • Monday, Aug. 27:   New Student Orientation Program (NSOP) begins. Adviser Briefing will likely be held on the morning of this day
  • Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 28-30:   Advising meetings take place between 1 - 4 p.m. in advisers’ offices
  • Friday, Aug. 31:   Optional advising day and Columbia launches actual Registration, which will last through Friday, Sept. 14 (Aug. 31 - Sept. 1 is for entering first-year students only)

Most students will be in mandatory programs and trainings during the mornings (9 a.m. - 1 p.m.) Monday through Thursday, so if you plan on meeting with them individually, remember that afternoons are best for them.

More information about NSOP will be available soon, and we will update you as details develop.

On another front, within the next week, we will be updating our Student Planning registration software with a few enhancements.  We're looking forward to this upgrade as it includes many of your recommendations to improve navigation and add helpful information where most needed.

Here are a few enhancements worth noting:

  • Cleaner look overall, with more use of white space, upgraded fonts, and formatting
  • Improved Course Catalog search functionality
  • Ability to view course fees
  • Notification of wait-listed sections within the schedule planner

If you have any questions or suggestions about Student Planning, please contact Nancy Mustachio of BCIT (nmustach@barnard.edu). For any questions or suggestions about advising, please contact the Dean of Studies Office; deans are taking varying vacation dates this month, but one of the deans will respond (212-854-2024).
