News from the College of Business, Government & Law
We acknowledge the traditional owners, both past and present, of the various locations Flinders University operates on, and recognise their continued relationship and responsibility to these lands and waters. We recognise that Flinders was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the main Flinders campus located near Warriparinga.
Welcome to the March edition of the College of Business, Government and Law newsletter. Students are back on campus, and the place feels more alive and vibrant than it has for a long time. Our professional staff are flat out responding to the logistical challenges and the many inquiries and that our students
bring with them. Our academic staff are flat out launching new topics and setting up the foundations for stimulating and robust learning environments.
Our second newsletter for 2023 reflects this activity and energy, including our lead story on the new suite of space-related topics. Both topics have a strong interdisciplinary dimension, including business, policy, legal and criminal dimensions arising from our exploration and use of outer space. Two international visitors last year commented to me that the most distinctive thing that they noticed from their time with CBGL was the extent of interdisciplinary engagement. It’s great to see that this engagement is now embedding itself in the design and delivery of our educational offerings.
Thanks everyone for all your work in setting up the foundations for another great year.
Kind regards,
Michael Michael Gilding
Vice-President and Executive Dean

New topics to nurture our focus on space
Dr Kathryn Robison Hasani and Dr Stacey Henderson (pictured at the top of the newsletter) have spearheaded an innovative new suite of space governance topics that enable students to explore the business, policy, legal and criminal issues that might arise from the exploration and use of outer space. Keep an eye on these topics - prominent space companies are slated to collaborate with the university to provide students with unique, future-focused projects during their studies. Outer Space
Governance: Business, Policy, Law & Crime
This undergraduate topic provides an overview of the history and current landscape of the space governance environment, including space law and policy. After building a solid foundation, this topic will teach students how to tackle complex problems in space innovatively through project-based learning. The first half of the semester is focused on classroom-based learning, while the second part of the semester is project-based learning with industry partners in the space sector.
International Space Law and Governance
This postgraduate topic recognises that we are in a key moment in history - both nationally and internationally - in terms of the expansion of in human activity in outer space, and the legal and governance issues this brings with it. This topic provides a critical overview of the legal and governance issues that arise in the context of space activities.

It’s that time of year again - when organisations start promoting their graduate vacancies to universities across the country. This year, there will be a two-day Careers Festival (22 & 23 March), open to all students at all levels on the Bedford Park campus.
With employers struggling to fill their graduate quotas due to Australia’s skills shortage, we are attracting a record number of registrations. For BGL students this is a chance to connect with major graduate employers seeking fresh business, government, law, criminology talent.
Please help us get the message out to your students - by including this information on your FLO/Canvas topic, including a slide in your lectures, or any other means!
Students can either use the QR code to scan on their device and register, or book directly through CareerHub.
New web pages shine a light on Business careers
We know that career outcomes are one of the key drivers for people considering university study. So, why not bring together information about those outcomes for prospective students to discover, right alongside the Flinders courses that will help them get there?
Enter our suite of Business career pages: Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Economics, Sports Management, Human Resources and Business Management. Each aims to engage audiences by providing them with information about potential occupations and employers, growth areas, salary expectations and more. If the Business pages prove to be successful, this
concept will be rolled out across all study areas in BGL.
It's time to update your staff profile 🕒
If you haven't looked at your staff profile web page in a while, now's the time. Staff profile pages rank very highly on Google, and are the place where academic and professional staff members need to house their media stories and professional activity.
Another tip: the staff directory can be found if you scroll down to the bottom of any web page on the Flinders website, and is searchable by name.

Introducing a LinkedIn presence for Industry Projects Recently, Industry Projects launched a dedicated LinkedIn page - and it's worth a follow.
Industry Projects at Business, Government and Law at Flinders University are embedded into various topics and involve students working in teams as consultants for local, South Australian organisations.
For students, these projects help them to gain in-depth industry experience and skills, and to build a strong network of connections before they graduate. For our industry partners, they access the chance to collaborate with a team of bright minds to conduct research and formulate actionable recommendations for their organisation, and can use the opportunity as a recruitment pathway for standout students.
Interested in the challenges of being a corporate counsel? Join us in April for our annual Laity Morrow Commercial Law Lecture, with guest keynote speaker Bob Santamaria.
Bob retired as ANZ Group General Council in September 2019, after 12 years with the bank - including leading its legal response to the high-profile Banking Royal Commission. Prior to joining ANZ, Bob had been partner at Australia's oldest law firm Allens and was the with the firm for 24 years.
Flinders University continues its great partnership with local employers that benefit graduates both during and after their study. Tony Duggan recently started as Senior Coordinator Horizon Awards within the Careers and Employability Team and has been involved in delivering Professional Development to recent BGL graduates. All companies have hired graduates directly through Flinders Career service.
Graduates suggested areas they would like some further development, with Tony tailoring his content towards this.
Emily Dally graduated from Flinders in 2019 with a Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management). Initially hired in a Graduate role with the Westpac Group, she's since worked at the company as a HR Associate and Career Transition Consultant, and is now enjoying her current role as a HR Advisor.
She was kind enough to share some career advice she'd give to someone who recently graduated, or is nearing graduation. Bookmark this useful information to share with your students or anyone else who might be looking for guidance!
