2-3 May 2024
The National Physical Laboratory (NPL), Teddington, London, UK

Gain valuable early career experience as a conference delegate and the opportunity to network and advance your career in a more relaxed environment

The BSSM's Eighth PGEM Conference aims to bring together PhD/MPhil postgraduate students and early career researchers involved in the field of Engineering measurement and experimental techniques in stress, strain and vibration analysis. The conference provides an excellent opportunity to share and discuss their current research in a low pressure and relatively informal environment, learn about research projects at other institutions, network amongst like-minded people and make contacts for the future.

The conference is also an ideal opportunity for professionals from academia and industry to learn more about the cutting edge research currently taking place within UK Engineering technology institutions.

Sessions will be co-chaired between the student attendees / academics. A ‘Best Presentation Competition’ sponsored by Instron will be run during the conference based on peer-assessed judging by all attendees.

Prizes will be awarded to the winner and runners up for the amount of £125, £75 and £50.

Training & Certification dates for 2024

The only independently recognised strain measurement certification scheme in the world running for over 30 years following ISO 9712: the International Standard for Nondestructive Testing. Remote exams available on request.

Working with the strain gauge manufactures and experienced practitioners, we have also developed the Code of Practice for the Installation of Electrical Resistance Strain Gauges * and a Certification scheme to provide a complete skillset for precision strain measurement through a range of training courses and examinations for the certification of strain gauge personnel including: Technicians who install strain gauges, Designers who design instruments to measure load, Torque, Pressure, Distance etc and Engineers who use strain gauges for Stress Analysis

High Temperature testing of materials: the challenges in characterising material behaviour

28 June 2024
Open University, Milton Keynes, UK

The assessment of the life and integrity of engineering components and structures operating at elevated temperatures requires reliable knowledge of their mechanical properties. In particular, the time dependent nature of material behaviour at high temperatures makes this task doubly challenging.

This workshop will include presentations from experts on the measurement of material behaviour at high temperatures. The topics that will be covered include:

Development of new test methods, including those using miniature test samples
• Measurement of full field strain at high temperatures
• Creep behaviour of weldments
• Use of test data for assessment of material behaviour and component life.

The event will include a visit to high temperature testing facilities at the Open University.

The Measurement of Residual Stress using Laboratory Based X-Ray Diffraction Instruments; the Positives, the Pitfalls and a Round Robin Follow

19 November 2024
National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK

This follow up to the 2023 meeting aims to discuss the practical aspects of the technique including:

• Trouble shooting; how to spot what’s gone wrong (if anything) and what to do about it.
• How to check that your diffractometer is working correctly.
• Layer removal, the practicalities. How to determine the measurement depth etc.
• How to measure rough surfaces, shot peened samples etc.
• Sample geometry; the effects of curvature, shadowing, complex, compound corves.
• How to optimise your particular type of diffractometer.
• Variation of residual stress across sample surfaces, gradients across the surface.
• Measuring residual stress measurement as part of the manufacturing process.

The results of a Round Robin study will also be discussed and there will an exhibition with live X-Ray diffractometers.. Why not bring something to measure?

The BSSM Certification Scheme now includes a Pre-Wired Strain Gauge Installation Certificate

Level 1 qualification providing a qualification for engineers and technicians involved in the installation of pre-wired strain gauges. Showing  the holder has demonstrated a high level of skill in making strain gauge installations and can install gauges that can be used with confidence to make accurate and reliable measurements. The certificate can be integrated into the quality systems of participating businesses and organisations allowing them to demonstrate the competence of their employees. More
