Preliminary Municipal Litter Analysis Webinar - January 14, 2025

Background

In September 2024, CIF launched a project to analyze the generation and cost of managing municipal ground and public space bin litter as the Blue Box Program transitions to full producer responsibility for the collection and management of paper, packaging and packaging-like materials.  Eunomia Research & Consulting was retained to conduct the study, which included a comprehensive survey distributed to over 60 Ontario municipalities.

The survey results were intended to form the basis of a province-wide litter data analysis, however, the limited amount of available data restricted the ability to develop a robust analytical model.  Consequently, the study has evolved into a Preliminary Municipal Litter Analysis intended to provide a foundation for future litter monitoring, analysis and reporting.

This report is broken into two main sections:

  1. Quantities, Composition and Costs of Municipal Litter in Ontario - the methodology, data sources and assumptions used to estimate the quantity, composition and costs of municipal litter generated across Ontario municipalities.
  2. Community Approaches in Preventing and Managing Litter - an overview of international, provincial and municipal approaches to litter reduction and clean up (e.g., education and media campaigns, enforcement, regulatory measures/policies).

The report is currently being finalized and will be posted to its project page on the CIF website during the week of January 6, 2025.

About the Webinar

A webinar is being held for communities who are interested in learning more about the project results.

Eunomia will present highlights of the report. This includes:

  • estimated amounts of municipal ground and public space bin litter generated in Ontario and costs to manage these materials;
  • estimated generation rates and management costs for non-blue box and blue box materials including beverage containers (as a subset category), under three Ontario municipal groups (i.e., Large Urban, Medium & Small Urban and Rural); and
  • examples of innovative international, provincial and municipal litter reduction and prevention approaches.

This webinar will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
