An unprecedented situation is unfolding in the UK today after yesterday’s news that Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have both been fined by police for the parties that went on in Downing Street during pandemic lockdowns.

The idea that a sitting prime minister and his chancellor have landed themselves in this position raises all sorts of uncomfortable questions – not least whether we can now conclude that Johnson misled parliament over his actions. Matthew Flinders explains what we might expect in the days ahead as partygate flares up anew.
