SHOWCASE SPOTLIGHT - NORTHVILLE HIGH SCHOOL

Being able to recognize our hard working students for their passion and dedication is what our jobs are all about! As we travel to each of our three Student Showcase recipient schools from the State Conference, we also wanted to take the time and hear from the students as to what this competition meant to them. As your young leaders look ahead to new opportunities, share the following feedback on our Showcase competition and help prepare them for competing next year!

PATHWAY TO LEADERSHIP - ADMINISTRATOR CERTIFICATION

Looking to make the move to administration? We have you covered! The Path to Leadership program is owned and operated by the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP). It is the state’s only alternative route to earning a PK-12 administrator certificate. Our goal is to provide candidates with a PK-12 administrator certificate at an affordable cost and in a manageable time frame through a program developed by principals, for principals.

The program’s high-quality coursework is built on the Michigan Standards for the Preparation of School Principals and the Michigan School Improvement Framework and presented in an online format that will include mentoring and the building of a professional portfolio.

EARN YOUR SCECHS: DIGITAL LEARNING NETWORK

MASSP’s Digital Learning Network (DLN) was launched in 2018 offering professional training and growth for educators at all levels and backgrounds, right from the comfort of their own home or office.  Through a partnership with Michigan Virtual, learners build capacity on a variety of topics to advance their learning and apply relevant and practical information and strategies to their buildings and classrooms. Additionally, many of the DLN courses offer SCECHs toward certificate renewal.

Take a look at some popular DLN courses below:

Student Mental Health 101: Trends, What To Do, & Who Can Help
This course will focus on providing educators with options and strategies working with students with mental health issues.  Through articles, videos, and interactive content, participants will review current statistical trends, identify individuals in the school setting who are equipped to support these students and explain how outside agencies can be part of the solution as well.  Additional training is used to assist participants in how to respond to a student mental health crisis.

Trauma-Informed Schools: A Whole School Approach
This course aims to answer the following questions: What is a trauma-informed approach and how does it impact the classroom?  Through articles, videos, and interactive content, participants will identify key trauma statistics and terminology and compare and contrast proactive vs reactive strategies to support these students in the classroom.  The course will also provide building-level strategies and resources.

A Teacher's Guide to Khan Academy
Khan Academy is a free resource teachers can use to assign lessons and monitor student progress.  With thousands of free lesson resources including questions, videos, quizzes and unit tests, Khan Academy is a great resource for any teacher.  Khan Academy even offers personalized SAT practice for students and allows coaches to monitor Math & ELA SAT skills.  This course features videos, resources and other materials including feedback on assignments in order to get set up and start running with this game changing platform.  Participants will learn from Erin Carlson, an ELA teacher and Khan Academy Student Ambassador from Sandusky Jr/Sr High School.

Disciplinary Literacy for Secondary Leaders
As a secondary administrator or teacher leader, how can you support your teachers in moving toward more inherently motivating, academically rigorous learning experiences?  These courses are designed for leaders looking to increase student motivation and engagement, as well as literacy skills, across all content areas.
