From the Mayor

This week the peak body for local government in NSW – LGNSW – released a lengthy report on the depth of cost-shifting by state and federal governments onto local councils.

It’s a depressing read, showing that both levels of government offload around $1.5 billion in costs each year onto councils, which are already buckling under the weight of rate pegging and inflation. Cost-shifting essentially means councils footing the bill for government services and infrastructure they aren’t funded to deliver.

These costs include funds for emergency services, exemptions from rates for state owned organisations and meeting a 50% shortfall in funding for local libraries originally promised by the NSW Government. You can read the report at $500 per ratepayer: cost shifting blowout exposed in new report | LGNSW.

I’m thrilled to announce that nominations are now open for the inaugural Women’s Leadership and Inspiration Award!

The award celebrates local women who are making a real difference in Ku-ring-gai through leadership, advocacy and action. There are so many inspiring women in Ku-ring-gai who are making our community stronger, more resilient and inclusive.  If that sounds like someone you know, then nominate them today!

This week also marks the start of Plastic Free July – a global movement to reduce the amount of plastic ending up in landfill and our waterways. I encourage you all to join our Plastic Free July challenge and ‘choose to refuse’ single use plastic.

Finally, if you’re looking for activities with the kids these school holidays, make sure you check out our website. There are a range of fun activities for kids of all ages at the Wildflower Garden, Library branches and the Ku-ring-gai Art Centre.

Have a safe and happy school holidays!
