The theme of the conference was Grow for Good? Reappraising the UK's Growth Objectives. Workshops and presentations focused on topics including Town Centres, Inclusive Growth, Skills and Fair Employment, Housing, Economic Regeneration and Health & Wellbeing. We have had lots of positive feedback from those that attended who found the content useful and inspirational and really valued the opportunities to network with colleagues. For this edition, we highlight the Outstanding Contribution to Economic Development award, posthumously awarded to Lord Bob Kerslake. It was a real honour to welcome Eleanor Kerslake to receive this award on behalf of her late father, a much missed giant of our profession. To read more please click on the red button below IED Manifesto launchedThe Institute of Economic Development (IED) has launched a “radical agenda for change in the run-up to the likely 2024 General Election”, as it steps up its work for councils to be given statutory powers over economic development. In his opening speech at the IED Annual Conference in Birmingham, IED Chair and Chief Executive of Salford City Council Tom Stannard presented the Institute’s overarching call for economic development to be formally recognised as a statutory function provided by local authorities in Grow Local, Grow National, and a series of recommendations, sitting within six supporting pillars, which are deemed “critical for success”. To read more click on the red button below Social Value Engine WebinarWe recently held a webinar with the Social Value Engine which aimed to de-bunk the myths about social value and explain how to describe and measure social value in the round. Central to the event was the Social Value Engine the only UK accredited software tool for assessing social value, which is jointly owned and developed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Rose Regeneration, both members of the IED. To watch a recording, please click on the red button below Paving the Way for Inclusive Growth in the UKIED members Lightcast have produced an interactive blog following attendance at our recent conference. This focuses on working towards inclusive growth, linking with pillars identified in the IED Manifesto, in particular “Labour Market and Skills Activation, and how Lightcast specialist skills data can help with a locality's drive towards inclusive growth through skills policies. Levelling up funding NAO Report publishedThe IED was invited to comment in preparation of the recently published National Audit Office Report Levelling up funding to local government - NAO report. IED CPD Online UpdatesThere are two courses left to be delivered this year, one on R&D led growth (being held next week on 5th and 6th December) and the other an "Introduction to Regeneration". We are also pleased to announce that registrations are now open for our Certificate and Advanced Certificate of Economic Development. More details on this can be found here. This is a series of short online courses being delivered over the year, upon completion of which you will be awarded a Certificate/Advanced Certificate in Economic Development. Finally, we have introduced a new online course on Subsidy Control. This important course will focus on when Subsidy Control applies, how the principles are applied and demonstrated to ensure compliance. Find out more about all of our courses in our events calendar. Labour Party Policy and how it may impact economic developmentThe IED and AECOM recently ran a session on the current understanding of Labour Party policy and how it is likely to impact on economic development activity in the UK and economic development practitioners in the event that the Labour Party are successful in the next general election. MJ Awards 2024The Municipal Journal Awards 2024 have a category of particular relevance to IED members - A whole team approach to tackling health inequalities. This category invites entries from teams within local authorities who are taking innovative approaches to improve health and reduce inequalities. Judges will be looking for teams within councils who have worked alongside public health colleagues, or others, to place improving health at the heart of their work. Submissions should be led by teams outside of public health and this may include housing, transport, planning, economic development, children’s services or education.
