The Black Lives Matter movement has been lifted up by many Black artists, but what do people in Canada hear about Black classical artistry?
Today in The Conversation Canada, Gloria Blizzard of University of King’s College, Dalhousie University, and Gillian Turnbull of Ryerson University combine reporting and musicology research to offer insights into the landscape of Black classical musicianship in Canada today.
They share that “Black classical instrumentalists often experience their successes, as well as the subtle and overt blows of anti-Black racism without the support of colleagues and mentors who might help navigate such terrain.” They also share what respect, allyship and support look like — not to mention some beautiful music.
