Medical School Curriculum Innovation

Carley Sauter, MD. Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Current course co-director for Foundational Capstone (for M2 students) and Continuous Professional Development (for M3 and M4 students)

We are entering a very exciting time in MCW’s School of Medicine with the curricular redesign.  There are many opportunities that will arise for PM&R physicians and residents with the new curriculum. The new curriculum envisions longitudinal and competency based education that breaks down silos and will span across the years of medical school. Phase one, formerly the basic science years, will transform into Integrated Science blocks in which clinicians and scientists will work together to teach using integrated modules and cases. Phase Two, formerly the clinical clerkship years will transform into more integrated core clinical experiences for students. Phase Three will allow students to gain individualized clinical experiences to ready them for residency. Physiatrists are well equipped to work within this new curricular approach given our focus on holistic and longitudinal patient care and a team based approach to problem solving. It is an exciting time to share our experience and skills with our medical students! Please reach out if you would like to get more involved in teaching at the medical school.

Farewell Dr. David deDianous!

Dr. David deDianous joined MCW in January of 2001. He received his undergraduate education and his Medical Degree from Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO. He completed his PM&R Residency training here at MCW from 1992- 1996. Followed by a fellowship training in Spine Rehabilitation and Interventional Techniques at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. Over the last two decades at MCW Dr. deDianous cultivated interventional spine care and evidence based methodologies into clinical practice.

Dr. deDianous served as the Medical Director of SpineCare, Director of Interventional Spine and co-director of the FH and MCW Spine Service line from 2015 through 2019. He believes that "the team approach is the best management for patients who have difficulties with function and quality of life care issues." Dr. deDianous was notably passionate about his nonoperative spine care approach of patients. His methods included therapy, interventional spine injections and medication management.

Though he is leaving MCW, Dr. deDianous will continue his practice with Mayo Clinic in LaCrosse, WI. Thank you Dr. deDianous and well wishes to you as you continue to develop your career!

A message from Oksana Sayko, MD

Dear all,

I would like to personally thank all of you who helped packing the supplies last Saturday and donated in any other way. Thank you for finding time to do this hard but very important work in your free time.

When I was packing at the warehouse on Saturday, I was amazed by how many different people were there who have no relationship to Ukraine! It warmed my heart. Ukraine will win this terrible war if it has so much support from people like you!

Thank you!

Oksana

May 5th is Cinco de Mayo!

This annual celebration marks the victory of Mexico over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, which took place during the Franco-Mexican War. Ignacio Zaragoza led a vastly outnumbered Mexican force to victory against the larger French army. It is often mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day which takes place September 16th.

Cinco de Mayo gained significant popularity in the United States around the 1980’s as marketers sought to capitalize on the holiday. Over time, it has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage with a special focus on music, dancing, food, and drinks.

May Month-long observances:

  • Mental Health Awareness Month
  • Jewish-American Heritage Month
  • National Asian American Month
  • South Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Monthly Wellness Feature: How Worrying can take a toll on your physical and mental health

Worrying can affect your health significantly. If it is something that you feel is constant instead of fleeting, then it is best to talk to your doctor. Worrying too much can trigger "stress hormones" in our nervous system. This can cause an accelerated heart rate and breathing, spike in blood sugar, and send more blood to our legs and arms. Our muscles in our shoulders and neck tense up, which can ultimately lead to migraines and tension headaches. Deep breathing, meditation, yoga, and massage techniques can help alleviate this. Overall if you find your mindset to be in constant worry, it is very vital to contact your physician before it takes a long term effect on your health.

COVID-19 Update: Face Coverings, Visitors & Contractors

1. Updates
Screen2Work for MCW facilities no longer required, however there will be a continued use for Froedtert facilities. MCW Employees can show their badges prior to entering Froedtert Hospital.

2. Face Coverings
The WI Department of Health Services (DHS) recently aligned its COVID-19 metrics to coincide with the CDC’s in monitoring the impact of COVID-19 on communities.  Wisconsin’s current COVID-19 Community Risk Level is low and when considering preferences shared by many MCW employees and learners, effective June 6, mask wearing for fully vaccinated individuals will no longer be required.  MCW continues to strongly recommend wearing masks and employees and learners are encouraged to do so.

3. Visitors and Contractors
Effective May 1, 2022, group gatherings or meetings guidance will allow for a group size of 100 percent maximum room capacity. Face coverings will continue to be required. We currently allow guests who have a business or education purpose and are escorted by an MCW employee or learner. We will welcome all community visitors back to campus, including for events, on July 1.

Additional details and information regarding these items may be included in the InfoScope posting for this communication.
