Naval Point – Te Nukutai o Tapoa Development Update

Lyttelton Recreation Grounds formal opening

The new sports courts at the Lyttelton Recreation Ground will be named after community stalwart, volunteer and advocate Flora McGregor.

The “Flora Courts” will be dedicated at the official opening of the newly revamped Lyttelton Recreation Grounds on Saturday 7 February, from 1-2pm.

The Lyttelton Recreation Ground Reserve Management Committee (LRGRMC) recommended naming the courts after Flora McGregor, who passed away in 2023.

Ms McGregor was a driving force behind the inclusion of netball courts at the Grounds.

The proposal was supported by Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, Lyttelton Netball and the McGregor whanau. Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula Community Board approved the proposal at their meeting on 2 February.

Naval Point redevelopment update

Concept design for Magazine Bay jetty and swim platform

Magazine Bay jetty
The tender process for the Magazine Bay jetty  rebuild is underway. The project involves rebuilding the section of jetty that remains since the rest of the marina was removed, and building a new swim platform. The jetty will be reclad using wood donated by Lyttelton Port Company. The image above shows the concept design.

Naval Point - western development
Planning for the next phase of the Naval Point - Te Nukutai o Tapoa redevelopment continues. This will focus on upgrading the marine and waterside facilities in the western area of the site. Work will include revamping the public ramp and hand launch ramp. Consenting works are underway and will continue into 2026. A hearing to be scheduled once this process is complete.

Shared facilities
Alongside the Council’s work, Whakaraupō Recreation Inc (WRI) are developing plans for shared facilities, storage and space for 18 different sport and recreation clubs based at Naval Point.
