- New directors named for Bluemound Rehabilitation Hospital. Three new directors have been hired as part of the Bluemound Rehabilitation Hospital leadership team. Together they will lead and oversee the day-to-day operations.
Laura Zindars, BSN, RN, named Director of Patient Care Services and Operations
Laura will join us on March 14, 2022 and will be accountable for the overall management of nursing practice, nursing education, professional development, nursing research and nursing operations. Most recently, Laura had medical operations oversight at Family Health La Clinica and prior to that business development oversight at UW Health Rehabilitation Hospital. Laura earned her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Grand Canyon University and is currently completing her Master’s in Health Care Administration.
Jessica Doine, PT, DPT, named Director of Rehab Services Jessica will assume her new role effective March 11, 2022 where she will provide administrative and clinical direction for the Rehabilitation Hospital’s therapy services. Most recently, Jessica has served as Manager of Spinal Cord and Neuro Therapies at Froedtert Hospital.
Mark Sorenson named Director of Business Development
Mark will be accountable for the implementation and development of the census strategies. His start date is March 14. Most recently, Mark served as the Director of Business Development for Select Specialty Hospital in Madison. Mark earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Enhancing IPR Referrals and Admissions- A new referral process has started. Melitta Moonen is the admissions coordinator and Kayleigh Hagerty is the referral liaison. We will be recruiting additional referral liaisons in the spring.
Referral Liaison - Work with clinical teams and discharge planners to
identify IPR candidates and initiate referrals.
- Assess patients and educate patients and families about IPR.
- Work closely with PM&R consult team and admitting providers to complete pre-admission screens and communicate determinations in a timely manner.
Admission Coordinator - Work on the IPR unit to facilitate the admission once accepted by PM&R.
- Obtains pre-auth when needed; facilitates documentation submission and/ or peer-to-peer discussions.
- Provide working knowledge of the current and future bed availability to illustrate accurate information to referral sources.
- Communicate with referring unit/ team regarding timing of admissions and clinical needs that will impact the IPR stay.
Together, the Goals of combined work of Referral Liaison and Admission Navigator: - Recapture referrals from Community Hospital Division.
- Further improve timeliness of admissions decisions.
- Stabilize census on 5NE and reduce fluctuation.
- Standardize the admissions process so all parties know what to expect and when.
- Congratulations Dr. Lee for the approval of his promotion to the Professor rank with tenure on the Clinical Educator Pathway, pending approval of the MCW Board of Trustees in June 2022.

COVID-19 Update: Badge Access, Visitors & Contractors, Onsite Amenities1. Badge Access to MCW
MCW’s Milwaukee campus entrances will continue to be accessible with your MCW ID/access card 24/7. As MCW continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, our entrances will continue to be ID/access card controlled. Once we progress to a phase where visitors, guests, and family members are allowed on campus, additional information on visitor management processes will be communicated. Questions regarding your MCW ID/access card should be directed to MCW Public Safety, Access Center, 414-955-8471 or pubsafety@mcw.edu.
2. Visitors and Contractors
All three campuses remain in the Very High phase in which, visitors, guests, and family members should continue to refrain from coming to campus. Vendors and contractors are allowed when doing mission critical work and in compliance with safety processes outlined by MCW Facilities and Operations.
Vendors and contractors permitted in MCW spaces will need to be escorted from the Milwaukee HRC north entrance to the work area and should complete the COVID-19 screening tool within two hours prior to being onsite.

MCW encourages its employees and learners to be prepared for limited food service and seating options on Milwaukee campus in the Very High phase. Also, please familiarize yourself with the Tonkens Fitness Center use restrictions. Dan Brever, new Research Grants Coordinator. Over the past decade, he has devoted himself to a career of service, that has allowed him to help many children and families. He has served with multiple development departments for a youth residential treatment center and childhood trauma informed summer camp experiences. Most recently, he has graduated from UW-Whitewater with a BS in public policy and administration, emphasis of nonprofit business management. Dan is excited for this next adventure with the MCW, because he believes that he can add to the dedicated service provided by PM&R.
Marna is the new Administrative Coordinator for PM&R. She is an accomplished administrative professional having previously worked as an office manager and most recently an administrative specialist for the past seven years with Adult Psychiatry at UCLA Health in Los Angeles. She takes great pride in having been an integral part of successfully doubling the size of her department (over 200 providers) in the past few years while bringing a positive attitude and tireless energy. She is thrilled to return to her hometown of Milwaukee, where she graduated from her alma mater, Marquette University. In her free time, she likes to spend time with family and volunteer at local organizations.
Catherine recently moved from Wausau, WI where she was an Assistant/ Coordinator at Northcentral Technical College for five years. She has more than 15-years of administrative experience working primarily in the healthcare and education fields where she was cross-trained in multiple areas making her a bit of a jack of all trades. Catherine believes that knowledge is power, and that education can help one to succeed in life. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in both Psychology and Human Services from Upper Iowa University. Outside of work, Catherine enjoys spending time with family and friends, attending concerts and shows, and watching movies.
After almost eighteen years with PM&R, Bea Envila has accepted a new role in the Emergency Department and will transition on Mar. 21, 2022. She will be supporting a couple of department chiefs and other faculty. Bea moved to Wisconsin in Oct. 2003 to follow Carlos’ dream job. She initiated her career in MCW as a temp administrative assistant in PM&R in Sept. 2004, supporting our previous department chair, Dr. Tim Dillingham. In addition to supporting Dr. Braza, among many other activities, Bea has coordinated faculty recruitment, supported faculty during promotion process, coordinated many conferences, retreats, departmental social events, etc. She takes pride on her job and the contributions she has made to PM&R. Bea deeply appreciates all the valuable experiences and skills gained and has greatly
enjoyed working with everyone in PM&R.
I-41 to close overnight March 3-4I-41 between Watertown Plank Road and Burleigh will be closed the nights of Thursday, March 3, and Friday, March 4. The highway will be closed from 10:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. each of those nights. Plan accordingly if you are traveling to the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center Campus during that time as delays on I41 NB and SB beyond the limits of the freeway closure are expected as well as on HWY 100, the alternative route.
March 18th is the Hindu Festival Holi!
Also known as the Festival of Colors or Festival of Love, it is a celebration of good triumphing over evil and the return of spring. Associated with a number of religious stories, this holiday is primarily celebrated by people in India, Nepal, and by Hindus around the world. The festival begins the night before with a Holika Dahan, where people gather around a bonfire for ritual and prayer. The next day marks Rangwali Holi, which is celebrated with dancing, singing, and playfully throwing brightly colored powder and water at others. Additionally, March marks the one-year anniversary of when the MCW PM&R Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee was first imagined. Below are some highlights from the past year and events to look forward to: - Committee created and distributed a needs-assessment survey of department faculty and staff to help focus committee efforts.
- Drs. Zvara and Wineman gave a Kaleidoscope presentation regarding people with disabilities and health disparities.
- Residents had a movie night related to a DEI topic and watched Crip Camp: a Disability Revolution.
- Dr. Sayyad presented a cultural competency lecture to the residents.
Upcoming May 6th: lecture from the MCW Office of Diversity and Inclusion regarding microaggressions and how to be an
"upstander" In the works: DEI related research and journal club, partnering with a Milwaukee school to teach about adaptive sports and PM&R, possible partnership with Saturday Morning Clinic, and more!
