Status Update:
Signalling the end of the CIF Price Sheet

As we close in on the transition of the first set of municipal programs to producer-led responsibility, the CIF Price Sheet will soon come to an end. This is because the Price Sheet’s accuracy and reliability will decline as fewer municipalities are able to provide the data that the Price Sheet relies on.

Researching Alternatives

To help municipalities prepare for this change, CIF engaged EcoCompass to evaluate other sources of post-consumer commodities pricing to determine whether there is a suitable alternative.

EcoCompass presented their findings to the CIF’s Post Collections committee and worked with them finalize the study. The CIF Price Sheet Alternative Analysis report is now available. It details the methodology used to conduct the comparison work, the results of the analysis, and the conclusion that a viable alternative to the CIF Price Sheet is available.

Ongoing Individual Commodity Pricing and Composite Index Availability for 2023

Once the CIF Price Sheet ends, and until the end of 2023, CIF will be able to provide an alternative source of individual commodity pricing and an alternative composite index, through an arrangement with Secondary Markets Pricing (SMP). When the changeover happens, monthly individual commodity pricing will be sourced solely from SMP. To create a monthly composite index, again, commodity pricing from SMP will be used in lieu of the monthly CIF prices, though the RPRA Ontario based composition data will remain the same.

NOTE: It will be important that users understand key considerations detailed in the report, when using SMP pricing data in lieu of CIF’s commodity pricing data.

When will the CIF Price Sheet terminate?

The final CIF Price Sheet publication is anticipated to be July 2023. The exact end date is dependent on variables not yet determined, including when the number of municipal inputs will decline below the necessary threshold. Once the exact end date is determined, another CIF Bulletin will be circulated to notify Ontario communities.
