Ruth Cherrington's presentation at the ISPIM Innovation Conference 2025

We’re proud to share that Ruth Cherrington, Co-Investigator on the Future Fibres Network+, recently presented original research at the ISPIM Innovation Conference 2025 in Bergen, Norway.

The paper explores how circular economy (CE) transitions are deeply place-based - shaped by local capabilities, histories, values, and networks. Drawing on insights gathered from semi-structured interviews and a participatory workshop in Truro, Cornwall (delivered through the Future Fibres Network), the study offers a nuanced perspective on how CE pathways emerge in non-core regions through the dynamic interplay of social, cultural, and industrial actors.

Key themes:

  • Regional innovation ecosystems & circular opportunity spaces
  • Place-based dynamic capabilities in the fashion/textile sector
  • Translating sustainability missions into local action

We’re especially grateful to those who contributed during the Truro workshop. Your insights directly shaped the research - and the feedback received in Bergen now informs our next step: developing the paper for journal submission.  As part of Future Fibres, this work reinforces our commitment to sectoral transformation through place-sensitive, interdisciplinary approaches to sustainable textile innovation.

What is 'permastink'?

Freelance writer, Andy Extance, has written an article just published in the Royal Society of Chemistry's Chemistry World  on The chemistry of permastink and how to prevent it.  Andy got in touch with the Fabriotic project team-one of our NERC-funded mini projects-after having seen updates on the FFN+ website following our meeting at the Design Museum in London.  Permastink is the malodour created in sports apparel after multiple usage.  The Fabriotic project has found a way of reducing permastink naturally which makes garments more durable.  Read the article here.
