The Flinders University Alumni Awards acknowledge the significant contributions made by our graduates to the community, the University or within their chosen field, locally, nationally and internationally. Rikki Cooke received an Early Career Alumni Award for her significant commitment and dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable South Australians by establishing Treasure Boxes, a vital, practical and life-changing organisation. After completing her Masters in Social Work, Rikki Cooke (BBehavSc(Psych) ’14, MSW ’17) knew she wanted to do more for at-risk children and their families, so she quit her day job and launched Treasure Boxes, which now supports over 2,500 vulnerable kids every year. Celebrating International Day of People with DisabilityIDPwD is a United Nations observed day aimed at increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. On 3 Dec each year we are reminded to celebrate the contributions and achievements of people with disability. Here, we celebrate two recent EPSW graduates with disabilities who have not only achieved degrees in Social Work and Psychology, but are now devoting their time and expertise to helping others. Michelle Candy (BSocWk ’21) is helping others with disabilities to enjoy fulfilling work and volunteer opportunities at Red Cross Australia, and Bruce Meatheringham (BBehavSc(Hons) ’22) uses his own lived experience with Autism to mentor and advocate for others with Autism. Rural and remote placement opportunities can change livesTwo Flinders pre-service teachers recently undertook the placement of a lifetime - one which has ultimately influenced their decision as to where they would like to teach once registered. Madison Stroud and Henri Dennis (pictured above) were fortunate to spend time at Oodnadatta Aboriginal School in the State's North. Of her experience in this remote location, Madison said: "It has truly been so wonderful, and we are so grateful to all staff both at Flinders and in Oodnadatta for providing this opportunity. I think I can confidently speak on behalf of Henri and I when I say that we fell in love with Oodnadatta and its beautiful community of people. Further to this, because of our placement, we both now look forward to pursuing careers as teachers in remote Australia post-graduation." Henri and Maddy also helped to host the students from Oodnadatta on their visit to Flinders just a short time after their placement finished. We hope to continue to work with Oodnadata Aboriginal School to provide such opportunities for future students, which no doubt have immense benefits for all involved.
