Incoming President's Letter
Dear Members of the Arkansas Veterinary Medical Association, As I reflect on our recent Winter Meeting, I am filled with gratitude and optimism for the year ahead. What a tremendous gathering it was. The energy in the room, the thoughtful discussions, and the camaraderie among colleagues were a powerful reminder of why the ArVMA is such a strong and respected organization. When veterinarians come together, not only do we learn—we strengthen the bonds that support our profession and the communities we serve.
One of the highlights of the meeting was the opportunity to introduce and connect with our new lobbyist firm, DBH Consulting, and our new Executive Director, Brittny Daubenheyer. Both bring fresh perspectives, valuable experience, and a clear commitment to advocating for Arkansas veterinarians. In a time when legislative and regulatory issues continue to impact how we practice, having a strong team representing our interests at the Capitol is essential. I am confident that their leadership and partnership will position us well to protect both the public and our profession. They will soon be embarking on a statewide tour to encourage activism and advocacy, so stay tuned and look for them in your area.
We also received promising updates from Lyon College and Arkansas State University. The continued development and progress in veterinary education within our state is exciting and significant. Expanding opportunities for veterinary training in Arkansas has the potential to strengthen our workforce pipeline, improve access to care, and ensure that future generations of veterinarians are prepared to meet the evolving needs of animal health and public safety. It is encouraging to see meaningful momentum in this area.
As we move forward, I look ahead to a productive and impactful year in veterinary medicine. Our priorities remain clear: supporting one another, advocating for sound legislation, protecting the public, and safeguarding the integrity of our profession. Together, we can continue building an association that reflects the dedication, compassion, and excellence of Arkansas veterinarians.
Thank you for your engagement, your service, and your commitment to the ArVMA. I am honored to serve as your president and look forward to working alongside each of you in the year ahead. With appreciation, Sarah Shedenhelm, DVM

Congratulations to Dr. Archie Ryan, owner of Southwest Drive Animal Clinic, who has been named 2026 Vet of the Year! This prestigious award recognizes Dr. Ryan's lifelong dedication to animal health.
Dr. Ryan graduated with a BSA from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville and received his DVM from Louisiana State University. Initially, he worked for a large animal practice in Claremore, Oklahoma. He then worked at a sizable small animal practice in Houston, Texas before moving to Jonesboro, Arkansas in 1991.
As a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, Dr. Ryan cares for over 100 birds and other animals each year. He is also an ardent supporter of his children and enjoys hiking, traveling, and fishing with his family.
Dr. Ryan's dual commitment to clinical practice and wildlife rehabilitation sets a gold standard for the profession. We are honored to call him one of our own.
Meet Dirk Maus, 2026 Pet of the Year! After twelve incredible years as a Therapy Dog, Dirk retired in 2026 following a drug reaction that led to Stage 4 Renal Insufficiency. His paw print has been imprinted across various communities, from XNA National Airport to schools, libraries, care facilities, and stress relief events at the University of Arkansas during finals. Dirk’s journey reminds us of the profound impact therapy animals have on our mental health and well-being. We are pleased to name him our 2026 Pet of the Year!
