Our School of Communication community is driven by a sense of shared mission to pursue knowledge and translate it into meaningful solutions that improve the lives of people around the world. With 2020 thankfully behind us, 2021 is a new year full of new opportunities, friendships, and creative approaches to scholarship and teaching as we share, collaborate, and develop new ideas of moving forward in good health together. I am excited to welcome you to the start of the spring 2021 semester. I am so proud of our alumni, faculty, staff, and community partners for pulling together and being so resilient during these unprecedented times. The university faculty, staff and administration have never been more prepared to start a school year. For the past several months, we have been hard at work preparing for the return of students with health guidelines in place. We have reconfigured the timetable, adjusted teaching modalities, rearranged classrooms, purchased PPE, and prepared for a range of contingencies. We continue to face the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic with creativity, flexibility and compassion. After a bit of rest and relaxation from school, I hope you return with a renewed sense of hope for the future as we embark on the spring semester. I also hope that you were able to invest in yourself for at least 12 days of Self-Care during the break and that you continue to invest in your well-being this semester with a daily calming activity or moment of reflection. As we continue to make our way through the challenges of dealing with the coronavirus, we are doing our best to keep things running smoothly, including continued teaching in whatever formats necessary. Top on my agenda is to help keep everyone safe, while providing the best education possible whatever the format we choose to deliver instruction. We aim to help you in every way we can so please continue to let us know how we can best help you achieve your goals for the semester. Not knowing what the future holds during these challenging times makes everything seem a bit more difficult for all of us, but rest assured we are working around the clock to continue to serve each of you in the best ways possible. We know that this continues to be a challenging semester and we truly appreciate you and all that you are doing. Thank you again for your patience and for finding opportunities to learn and grow together. For Chapman updates and information, visit cusafelyback.chapman.edu. Wishing you all good health! How Taking Selfies Affects WomenDr. Vendemia and her coauthors explore how women are affected by the act of taking selfies and sharing them with an online audience. The study was conducted by a lab experiment where female participants were assigned to either take selfies or photos of objects. They describe their findings on women's self objectification, mood, self-esteem, and social aggression toward female peers. Check out their research and findings! Chapman RadioChapman Radio is gearing up for the virtual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Conference at the beginning of March. This national conference gives college radio stations and its student-DJs a chance to come together, network, and learn more about broadcasting. Beyond just a chance to learn more about radio and broadcasting the Intercollegiate, the Broadcasting System Conference has an awards ceremony for the best in college radio, in which Chapman Radio has three finalists. Karla Carmona (SCC major) and her show Let’s Talk Música was nominated for Best Foreign Language Show, Chalya Phelps (COM major) and her show Rough Roommates was nominated for Best Radio Drama, and our station was nominated for Best Promotional Sweeper.
