A recent study of hundreds of white-tailed deer (Bambi’s species) in Iowa found that 80% of them had an active COVID infection. The fact that the deer were infected with different variants suggests that humans passed the virus on to the unfortunate ungulates more than once. How this happened remains a mystery.
There is a credible risk of the virus mutating in the deer and being passed back to humans. Thankfully, there is no evidence that this has occurred yet. Scientists will be keeping a close eye on the situation.
