What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - February.

LUMA. Photo credit: Gareth Ireland, Escape Quest Queenstown. 2021 is off to a roaring start with plenty of arts events happening in and around Central Otago. Programmes for the Festival of Colour and the Dunedin Arts Festival have been announced. This year, organisers have drawn on the artistic talents of New Zealanders - we can look forward to performances by The Chills, The Royal New Zealand Ballet, the New Zealand String Quartet and much more. After a break last year, it is good to see that LUMA will be happening again in 2021. The ongoing magic of the event is ensured with a fantastic line-up of local and national artists. Keep an eye out on the LUMA Facebook page for regular updates. If a bit of theatre is your thing, there is plenty coming up in February and March. Clyde Theatre Group brings us ‘The Pink Hammer’ on the 13th March, the
Alexandra Musical Society’s ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ opens on the 17th of February and Dunedin based Moose of Fire Productions are touring Central with 'A Hundred Words for Snow' from the 24th of February, with performances in Alexandra, Ranfurly, Bannockburn and Roxburgh. There are plenty of exhibitions to be seen around the district including ‘LAND: recent work by Eric Schusser’ at Hullabaloo Art Space, 'Natures Morte', an exhibition of works by Megan Huffadine at Eade Gallery and 'Six on the Dot' by Max de Roy in Wanaka. Queenstown's newest contemporary gallery The Broker Gallery, celebrates its opening with 'Conceal', an exhibition of 17 photographic works by Sarah Bultitude. Registrations are now open
for New Art in Old Cromwell happening in March. If you would like to learn a new craft or extend your skills in a particular discipline book your place now before spaces fill up. These workshops are led by well-known local artists and will be held in the Heritage Precinct in Cromwell. Our Central Otago Arts Trail booklets list the details of many open galleries and artists’ studios in the area. These booklets can be
found in information centres throughout Central Otago, Lakes District and further afield and provide you with a handy map so you can discover painters, sculptors, glass artists, ceramic artists, and many more talented people at your own leisure BUT sometimes our artists shift. Nigel Wilson's Open Studio can now be found at 8D Naylor Street just around the corner from Paulina’s in Historic Clyde. Nigel works from this studio and is open most days so pop along to look at his collection of current and past works. In addition, we continue to add new artists to our online Arts Trail so do not forget to keep visiting that page. In case you have not already heard, we are very excited to announce that the Arts Gold Awards will be happening again in Central Otago in 2021. These biennial awards were initiated by the Central Otago District Arts Trust in 2011 and aim to celebrate innovation and excellence in NZ visual arts as well as provide Central Otago artists further opportunity to exhibit their works alongside those of their NZ contemporaries. In the past, entries into the Arts Gold Awards have been open to artists aged 18 and over. The 2021 awards will include a new Youth Category for artists under the age of 18. Entry forms will be available from next week so keep an eye
out on our Central Otago Arts Facebook page for updates or contact manager@centralstories.com. Scroll down for more of 'What's On' in the arts this month.
