Project overviewWe are progressing work to deliver improvements at Mimosa Rocks National Park, supported by the NSW and Australian Governments Infrastructure Betterment Program funding. The project aims to improve flood resilience and visitor access and safety in four key precincts: Nelsons Beach, Gillards campground, Middle Beach campground, and Aragunnu campground. What to ExpectThe majority of the work will focus on drainage and road infrastructure, including culverts, erosion control and resurfacing. While some of these upgrades may not be immediately noticeable to visitors, they are essential, technically complex and represent a significant investment in protecting the park from future flood impacts. Key priorities for the project include:
This will help safeguard the park against future weather events, better protect natural and cultural values and improve visitor safety and access.
Nelsons Beach Road and carpark are set to be upgraded as part of the project.
What's been happening?The planning and assessment for the work is progressing well, with the project team carrying out environmental and cultural heritage assessments, technical investigations and concept design development, while engaging with a broad range of stakeholders for input. Key works in progress:
Concept maps Concept maps are being prepared for each precinct to showcase the proposed work and key improvements, subject to further site investigations, planning approvals and funding. The concept maps will be available to view on the project webpage in the coming months.
Work will include drainage and erosion control to future-proof carparks, campgrounds and pedestrian beach access.
Temporary closures during constructionVisitors are advised to that the following temporary closures are necessary for the safe completion of the work: From December 2025 to mid-2026 - Nelsons Beach precinct including Nelsons Beach Road and carpark will be closed to all access. From end April to December 2026 - Gillards, Middle Beach, Aragunnu campgrounds will be closed to all access. Specific closure dates will be confirmed once construction schedules are finalised. Closures will be staged and scheduled outside peak holiday times, where possible. The park is still open for visitors to enjoy the beaches and walks. Please note that precincts undergoing improvement works will be closed construction sites, with signs and barriers in place for visitor safety. For safety, please do not enter a closed area. Take the opportunity to explore some of the other great parks in the region. Alternative camping may be available at Picnic Point in Mimosa Rocks National Park or Hobart Beach in nearby Bournda National Park. Protecting park values National parks are managed to protect their unique natural and cultural values, while providing for sustainable visitor use and enjoyment. A Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for Nelsons Beach precinct has been completed, and an REF for the campgrounds is being prepared. Work will be delivered in accordance with strict environmental and cultural planning approvals.
