Talca-More

The War Cry of the Old Scotch Collegians

Our alumni eNews and a key resource for upcoming events.

From the President

Dear ,

In this edition of the Talca-More you will see an invitation to members to attend our annual AGM.  Please come along if you can make it and have your say on the future direction of the OSC.

This edition details several recent achievements of our OSC.  It is humbling to read.  I also wish to thank Michael Denny (OSC 2008) for his assistance in hosting the recent Tartan Lawyers’ breakfast between students and graduates of both Scotch College and PLC.

Congratulations to Peter Doyle (OSC 2001) in having a rowing boat named after him earlier this year having regard to his commitment to the College’s rowing teams since leaving over 20 years below.  Photo of Peter and his family above.

We have lots in store for the forthcoming calendar year including reunions and events for our business directory.

Please reach out if we can assist you on OSCPresident@scotch.wa.edu.au

Oldest Scotch Collegian Project

Calling all members of the Old Scotch Collegians community! As we embark on a search for our oldest living member, we're reaching out to those members aged 90 years and above. Your connection to the College is invaluable, and we want to honour and celebrate your contributions to the OSC community.

We are actively seeking further information about the whereabouts of the individuals listed below. If you have any information, or if you have been in contact with them recently, we would love to hear from you.

Together, let's ensure that no member of our community is forgotten. Please contact the Alumni Office at osc@scotch.wa.edu.au or phone 9383 6800, and we thank you in advance for your support.

Tartan Lawyers Breakfast

The annual Tartan Lawyers Breakfast, a combined event with PLCOCA, was held at the magnificent CBD office of Herbert Smith Freehills on Tuesday. Guests, including some senior students from both schools, thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality and networking opportunity, as well as the panel discussion and interactive question time with Aaron McDonald (2001), Michael Denny (2008) and Jenny Thornton (1977).

Alumni Achievements

Congratulations to Finn Harold (OSC 2023, Drama Captain) who has earned a spot at the 28th Performing Arts Perspectives This event showcases exceptional talents in dance, drama, and music. Finn's dedication has placed him among the top drama candidates from the highest-scoring WACE students. Only eight drama candidates are chosen, making this a truly remarkable achievement!

Congratulations to Nicholas Verryn (OSC 2020) for picking up two awards, Best West Australian Short Film Prize and the People’s Choice Prize for his short documentary Verge Collection in the inaugural Best Australian Short Film Competition.

Nicholas graduated from Scotch in 2020, and he has since studied Film & Screen Production at Notre Dame. He also worked as a Media Technician at the college, and regularly comes back to work with our senior Media and Film students.

Congratulations to Daniel Boshart (OSC 2023) for his record-breaking swim in the Men’s 100m Butterfly, at the Hancock Prospecting State Championships in December. Daniel clocked in at 53.63, destroying the 18 years WA Residential Record.

Congratulations to our Old Scotch Collegians who were recognised in the Australia Day 2024 Honours List.

The Honourable John Roderick McKechnie KC (OSC 1967) was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to the law, to the judiciary, and to the community of Western Australia.

Michael Snell (OSC 1965) was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to business, and to the community.

David Bean (OSC 1971) awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to secondary education, and to rowing.

These gentlemen are so deserving of the recognition and we congratulate them wholeheartedly on behalf of the OSC community!

Congratulations to Connor O’Sullivan (OSC 2018) who was selected to play for Ireland at the HSBC International Rugby SVNS in Perth in January.

Connor has been living in Ireland and training with the Ireland Rugby SVNS Squad for 2 years. He made his debut for Ireland (ironically against Australia) at the Toulouse SVNS in France, and has also represented Ireland at the Twickenham SVNS in London.

We are so pleased to see Connor continuing to contribute to the Irish team, with his SVNS career stats at 20 matches, 30 points scored and 6 tries scored, and counting!

Tartan Ties Podcast

James Christensen (OSC 2007, Alexander House) is an ultra-marathon swimming, ship driving, and self-described “recovering fat kid” who wants to use his love of challenging himself as inspiration for other aspiring 'average' people wanting to see what they're made of.

Tartan Ties invites you to sit back and listen to our chat with James.
