ARTS NEWSLETTER JULY - AUGUST 2011

Greetings all,
It's a hard time of year in Central, but it has a special magic, like the surprise of opening the bedroom curtains the other morning to see the snow gently falling. It is important to keep warm but we all need to get some fresh air and stretch the legs. Shortly I’ll do just that; don a hat, scarf, gloves, thick socks and a big coat, before venturing outside into the winter-wonderland with our dog.
There is an interesting collection of activities to check out on the events calendar this month. I went along to Hullabaloo on Saturday evening for the opening of ‘Five.’ It’s their annual group show but also a celebration of being five years since the artist collective started. Such a wonderful, dynamic group they are too, showing in their gallery in Old Cromwell. Actually, there is a bit of change afoot in Old Crowell just now. Roland and Marlene Schieder have closed Stoop Galleries Ltd. and moved back to Germany. Chris de Jong is revamping that space into an artist’s print studio. This is an exciting development for Old Cromwell and will further enhance the feel of the area. The other news is Olaf and Birgit Mengeringhausen have opened their shop ART-CUT Gallery in the Stumbles building, Old Cromwell. Olaf’s work is mainly focused in metal art and the
gallery will be open daily 10 am - 4 pm.
The Central Otago Arts Facebook page is really starting to function as a regular spot for arty updates and communications. I am quite amazed at the mechanics of Facebook and have learnt a great deal about its magical powers when trying to attract artists to enter the Central Otago Art Awards. It seems to have drawn far more interest than any other advertising we have undertaken. Google analytics (the online reporting system) tells us of where our traffic is coming from and Facebook is right up there for sending artists to the Art Awards page on the website. Artists have three weeks to get their entries in.
Tickets to the VIP Art Awards Opening are now available for sale. You can purchase them from Central Stories Museum in Alexandra or Hullabaloo Art Space, Cromwell. This promises to be an awesome night out so get your ticket now as there is only a limited amount on offer. Libby Hamilton will sing on the night which we are thrilled about. Here is a link to Libby on Youtube so you can hear for yourself how privileged we are to have her perform. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N6cifvVszo&feature=feedf Have a look at all that is on offer below and please send some feedback good or bad.
Regards Maxine
