Using publicly available data gathered by the Kepler Mission and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, scientists have discovered a three-star system. Two stars orbit each other, while an exoplanet orbits one of them. A third star moves around them. The discovery was made using various analysis techniques, such as studying the changes in brightness and the time between these shifts.
Today, in The Conversation Canada, the University of Regina's Samantha Lawler writes about how the discovery, in addition to turning science fiction into fact, reflected a collaborative approach to research and discovery that is unique to astronomy. By making telescope data and preliminary research findings available to all, Lawler writes "large team efforts and collaborations between telescope facilities will continue to produce astronomical discoveries remarkable enough to surpass science fiction."
