SempionattoPostdoctoral Scholar, Andrew and Peggy Cherng Dept. of Medical Engineering I am a postdoctoral researcher in the Medical Engineering Department at Caltech, working with wearable biosensors for health monitoring. Before that, I did my PhD in Nanoengineering at UCSD. My research interests involve the development of non-invasive biosensors for the continuous and real-time self-monitoring of health. My job is to develop biosensors that can be worn as a skin patch to read the molecular information in your sweat. These wearable biosensors can replace finger pricking and implantable needles used by diabetes patients. In April 2024, I will be joining Rice University in Houston, TX as an assistant professor to continue pursuing the goal of developing affordable medical devices. After working with sweat, I really got interested in any activity that makes you sweat. I like hiking, running, lifting, volleyball, etc. During my PhD, I lost 22lb (10 kg)! Sweat sensors are making me healthier already ;) But don’t worry, I can also induce sweating using the sensors, so you don’t need to exercise at all! You can check our group research here, here, here, and here. Oumeng ZhangPostdoctoral Scholar, Electrical Engineering Hello there! I'm a postdoctoral scholar currently working in the Biophotonics lab in the electrical engineering department. I joined Caltech in June 2022 after completing my PhD at Washington University in St. Louis. My passion lies in building microscopes. I love designing innovative imaging systems that enable me to explore diverse scales, spanning from DNA and individual protein molecules to larger entities like arthropods in the rhizosphere. Lately, we started an exciting project involving cameras capable of capturing images within soil environments. By adapting the latest imaging techniques in soil studies, we can monitor interactions among various organisms, including plant roots, fungi, and bacteria in the soil, which ultimately contributes to our understanding of environmental dynamics. When I’m not playing with mirrors and lenses, I enjoy solving different kinds of Rubik’s cubes and watching live theater performances. We'd like to feature you!Calls for Nomination & Funding OpportunitiesCaltech’s Office of Foundation Relations maintains an online database and email subscription service of primarily non-federal funding opportunities as a resource for the Caltech community. Opportunities include calls for proposals released by private foundations, public charities, associations, corporations, internal Caltech opportunities and federal limited opportunities. The Bill Gross Prize for EntrepreneurshipThe Bill Gross Prize for Entrepreneurship awards prizes for undergraduate or graduate students who submit a business plan to launch a product, process, or a novel use for an existing technology. Students may apply as individuals or as members of a team. At the end of the mentorship period, each individual or team will present their business plan before a panel of volunteer judges from across the entrepreneurship community. Winning teams will split $100,000 and be considered for internships with Caltech-associated startups. Learn more and apply. Submission deadline: January 8, 2024. Chen Graduate Innovator GrantsThe T&C Chen Centers for Systems Neuroscience and Social and Decision Neuroscience are delighted to announce a call for applications for the Chen Graduate Innovator Grants. Graduate students are invited to submit neuroscience focused proposals for independent experiments that will be supported by funds provided by the Centers. The project must be conceived and driven by the graduate student and should not be an obvious extension of other research in their lab. Proposals should not be copied and pasted from another proposal such as a student's NIH NRSA proposal or from a PI's NIH RO1. The program is meant to fund out-of-box ideas that would not otherwise be pursued. The submission deadline is Monday, November 27, 2023. Learn more and apply. RSI Ideation Grants - Call for ProposalsThese grants are intended to fund scientists and engineers interested in translating their ideas and technologies into wider world impact, and potentially creating new ventures. These grants serve the Resnick Sustainability Institute's mission to advance global sustainability by addressing challenges and opportunities associated with climate change and the stewardship of natural resources. Ideation funding supports conceptualizing technology development, from early idea to kickstarting a business. Expenditure categories include; techno-economic/carbon lifecycle analysis; shared workspace & tech facility fees; industry visits & conferences; small equipment, materials & supplies; and business information. Rolling applications accepted through December 31, 2023. Learn more and apply. 2024 RSI Pioneer Postdoctoral FellowshipThe Resnick Sustainability Institute's (RSI) Pioneer Postdoctoral Fellowship recruits outstanding recent PhD graduates to pursue research and training in exciting areas relevant to sustainability at Caltech. This fellowship will afford researchers access to cutting edge facilities, training, and broad expertise in the science and engineering needed to tackle pressing challenges in sustainability. RSI anticipates making up to 3 awards and welcomes applicants with exceptional backgrounds in research and who are committed to diversity and creating an inclusive, equitable culture. Candidates must secure a commitment from one or more Caltech faculty members to serve as a mentor and to provide office/lab space for the fellowship. Mentors will be expected to provide a 50% cost-share for the fellowship. Application deadline: Friday, January 12, 2024. Learn more and apply. |
