Dear Friends,
What the heck just happened? I know you know what I'm talking about, the ridiculous back-to-back hurricanes that just decided to give us a 1 to 2 punch within a week of each other.
I'd love to report we escaped the nonsense, but like most across Tampa Bay we did not. A week after hurricane Helene a freak flash flood created havoc in the Oldsmar area, with a torrential down pour just sitting over our warehouse (dramatized). This event caused our first flood where our trucks and belongings reside. Thankfully it only reached about 4 inches, however it touched the entire floor and wall space in our 3,000 square feet. We spent days cleaning, mopping and salvaging anything we could. The trucks were fine, though we were nervous as to what would happen with the next rain event.
Here comes hurricane Milton, such a jerk! We scrambled to move everything out and up, away from flood waters. We moved trucks across the area, 3 went to the airport, 2 inside the parking garage at Hyde Park (if you saw them it was like playing Where's Waldo!) Then the 3 that had to be towed went to our mechanic. "Sure lady, buy more trucks, you NEED more trucks (sarcasm)!" Little did we know our mechanics shop would suffer 4 feet of rushing rainwater in his very own flash flood! Of course our warehouse flooded a second time! Yep, you just can't make this stuff up. Our girl Julie in Sarasota also suffered roof loss at her home, however her sweet truck of happy was safe and did great.
Our warehouse is hobbling along, no office space, the restroom is out of commission and a flower cooler decided to take a little break from working. We did start to look for new, higher ground space, along with everyone else who flooded, so you can imagine how it's progressing.
While what wer're dealing with is asset related and mostly insurance treatable, our hearts breaks for those who lost everything. As we drive up and down the streets of our beautiful community we see the massive debris piles, we know how lucky we are; it could have been way worse!
I won't lie, we questioned so many things, suffered hard hits and took a massive pause. We lost revenue from selling, private events that were scheduled cancelled or postponed to 2025. As a small business these weather events just take the air out of the tires. But then something magical happens, you do an unexpected event where a corporate sponsor steps in to gift a hard-hit community beautiful flowers. The recipients were brought to tears and you're reminded of the why you do what you do, full circle moment!
We will continue to push forward, learn from what we just experienced, be smarter, leaner and maybe a tad bit nimbler. Hopefully we will find ourselves on a little higher ground, but that will take time.
