From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

Director General Visit – World Teachers’ Day
Today we welcomed Director General of Education, Jay Peckitt, who visited Subiaco Primary to personally thank our teachers for their outstanding work on World Teachers’ Day.

Mr Peckitt asked for a tour of the school and visited classrooms to see our amazing teachers in action. After the tour, he joined us for morning tea and met staff.

A highlight of the visit was hearing from our student representatives, Summer (Pre-primary), Natalia (Year 1), Ivy (Year 2), Jacques (Year 3), Allegra (Year 4), Jude (representing Year 5) and Elise (Year 6), who each spoke about the teachers who have inspired them this year. Their reflections described teachers as “legends,” “funny,” “caring,” “nurturing,” and people who make them “feel safe and important.” Beautiful, heartfelt words that touched every teacher and delighted the Director General.

A wonderful celebration of our staff and the difference they make every day. Happy World Teachers’ Day to all our Subiaco teachers!

Chapathon & Year 6 Food Stall
A huge thank you to Alessia, our Chaplain, for organising this year’s Chapathon – a much-loved annual event at Subiaco. The Chapathon raises funds for resources to support student and staff mental health and wellbeing.
Chris Shorter and Alessia are now working together on the 2026 Health and Wellbeing Operational Plan, ensuring our commitment to wellbeing continues to be a key focus across the school.

Thank you also to our Year 6 students and parents who prepared and donated a wonderful selection of delicious treats for the Year 6 Food Stall. Students were very excited to make their purchases at recess, knowing they were helping raise money towards the Year 6 Graduation celebrations.

Staff Meeting – Class Placements 2026
Our teaching staff are currently dedicating many hours to preparing class placements for 2026. This process is approached with great care and professionalism. We work to ensure classes are well balanced, that requests are considered where possible, and that decisions are based on our teachers’ thorough knowledge of each child. We truly appreciate your understanding and trust as we make the very best decisions we can for all students.

It’s been a wonderful week at Subiaco – full of gratitude, fun, and community spirit. From celebrating our amazing teachers to supporting wellbeing and preparing for 2026, it’s clear how connected and caring our school community is.

Have a great weekend, everyone!
Heather McNeil

Years 1–3 Wellbeing Survey

Last term, our Years 1–3 students took part in a short wellbeing survey designed especially for younger children. The survey helps us understand how our students feel about school and what helps them to feel happy, safe, and ready to learn. The information gathered gives us valuable insights that help Subiaco Primary continue to support the wellbeing and engagement of all our students.

There were many great results
99.8% of students feel safe at school.
99.7% stay focussed and persevere when something is difficult.
99.7% of students enjoy coming to school.
99% of students know their teachers care about them.
99.6% have a friend to play with at school.

Results the school will address
10% of students say their teacher hasn’t talked to them about being safe and kind online.
16% of students worry about the behaviour of other students.

Parents might want to know
16.5% of students stated they have a worry before they go to bed.

It’s common for children in the early years to experience worries before bed. Research shows that listening calmly, offering reassurance, and keeping a consistent bedtime routine can help children feel safe and settled. Parents can encourage their child to talk about what’s on their mind, acknowledge their feelings, and practise simple calming strategies such as slow breathing or thinking about something positive from their day. These small, supportive conversations build children’s sense of security and emotional wellbeing over time. Based on research from the Australian Institute of Family Studies and Beyond Blue (2023) on children’s emotional development and wellbeing.

Mr Hayward

Congratulations

"Raise Our Voice in Parliament" is an opportunity for young people under the age of 25 to write a speech about "What steps the government should take today to build a better tomorrow for young Australians?"

Congratulations to Darlene L in U6 whose Speech on Cyber Bullying was recently read out in Parliament by Senator Dorinda Cox. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ku7jpzO9p7A

Congratulations also go to Odette P-L in U6 who was accepted into the GATE program at Perth Modern as well as being selected to perform with the Youth Theatre Company in Scenes from the Climate Era which is part of next year's Perth Festival.

Interschool Debating

On Wednesday in Week 2, four teams of debaters from Years 5 and 6 went to Rosalie Primary School for an Interschool Debating competition. These debaters have been learning the skills of debating all year and practising hard (during their lunch times!)! We were joined by other schools in the area including Rosalie, Nedlands, North Cottesloe, Jolimont, Mount Claremont and Freshwater Bay.

When we arrived at Rosalie, the teams were handed their topics and whether they were on the affirmative or negative side. The topics we had this year were: “Being kind is better than being right”, “Living on a different planet is better than fixing our own”, “Being able to fly is better than being invisible” and “Donating money is better than helping one person”. Teams then had just under 2 hours to prepare their debate, with half an hour of that time dedicated to research on the internet, if needed.

After recess, it was the debaters turn to shine, and for the next few hours they were either debating or watching other debates. In the end, Subiaco won three out of their four debates, with the fourth debate being extremely close! Suniti and Aahana were even selected as ‘Star Debaters’, which is the award given to the best debater for each debating topic. It was a truly fantastic day for all, and we are so very proud of every debater who went along and gave it their best effort. Well done to the Interschool Debating team of Shreeya M, Anika D, Aahana GG, Avika GG, Suniti S, Akanksha K, Rakshana S, Binal K, Nathania C, Mehrsa AD and Yoona H. Click HERE for photos.

From the School Chaplain

Lego Club
On a mission to "build a better tomorrow" Wednesday's and Thursday's students and I have been having a "block party" at Lunch. Students have been creating epic constructions that are bricktacular. The imagination shown by students, as always, are solid and stack up beautifully. Well done everyone!!!

Chapathon
Each year Chapathon is held in Term 4. It is a day to be outside in nature connecting with our peers and listening to music. Students go at their own pace, as the aim of the morning is to be present, have fun outside, and connect with others. As I like to call it "Wellness in the Park".

This year we had wet weather but were still able to go to Theatre Gardens and have a fun time walking, dancing, or jogging around the marked course. It was lovely to see students smiling and having a good time with their peers.

I am very appreciative of the donations received as it allows us as a school to put it towards student wellness.

What is Student Wellness you ask? Student Wellness is providing students opportunities to flourish holistically and feel safe. As a school, we want to create a fun and safe environment for our students, which is what the Chaplaincy Program is set out to do. My role is to ensure students feel heard and seen. Donations allow for me to purchase items such as, Programs, items for Lego and Gardening Club, Yoga, competitions like The Dad Joke Competition, and more. Click HERE for photos.

Uniform Shop News

Welcome back to all our students for a busy Term Four!  It has been delightful to have some students from U6 come to the Uniform Shop and assist with folding and packing 200 gold polos. All students were polite and focused on the job whilst I enjoyed chatting to them about their graduation and future school enrolments. Thank You to Mrs de Lestang and Mr Egan for their involvement.

It was lovely to meet new parents and their children at the Kindy Orientation days. A very exciting time choosing the new uniforms for the start of Term One 2026!

The Uniform Shop is fully stocked with all uniform needs, and now is the ideal time to shop before school finishes on December 18.
The Backpacks in both small 16 litre and large 23 litre are due to arrive by 25 November. Shipping delays have been a problem, but I am assured they will be delivered!

The pre-loved rack has many polar fleece maroon jackets and trackpants. If you want a bargain, come and purchase some for the low price of $10 each!

I am seeking good condition Kindy/Pre-primary polos in all colours, as well as royal blue jackets. If your child has outgrown theirs please consider donating them, so another child can enjoy wearing them. Also, short sleeved gold polos in good condition are needed. Please ensure the items are washed and without stains.

I look forward to helping you in the Uniform Shop or filling your online orders and sending them home with your children. shop.subiprimarypc.com.au
