Naval Point - Te Nukutai o Tapoa Development UpdateUtility upgrade work starting this weekPower, fibre internet and water services to Naval Point - Te Nukutai o Tapoa will be upgraded to support the wider redevelopment of the site, starting Monday 22 January. The work will take around six weeks to complete and will wrap up in late February, ahead of the upcoming SailGP event. Works begin Monday 22 January, in the parking area near the Coastguard building (Area 1, marked on the graphic below) and will progress through several areas of the site. Indicative timeframes are marked on the graphic below. The upgrades will support the next stages of the site development, including the new Coastguard Canterbury building and new changing facilities at the Lyttelton Recreation Grounds. The work involves digging a shared trench, laying new cables for electricity and fibre internet, and water pipes. Work sites will be fenced off, and traffic management will be in place on site throughout the works. Every effort will be made to maintain public access to the site, though there may be some restrictions at times. Please follow any signage or directions from contractors to help keep everyone safe. Council staff and contractors are working directly with stakeholders to minimise any impacts of the work. Thank you for your patience and cooperation while we complete the next stage of the Naval Point - Te Nukutai o Tapoa Development Plan. Stage two of the Lyttelton Recreation Ground redevelopment underwayWork on the western side of the Lyttelton Recreation Ground has begun. The site will be relevelled and sown with new turf. This involves removing the topsoil, laying 200mm of gravels and sand, before returning the topsoil and sowing grass seed. Stage one (the eastern side of the ground nearest Godley Quay) was completed before Christmas. The new turf is growing in nicely. Once both sections of the grounds have been relevelled, the new multi-sport zone will be built. A court that can be used for either basketball or futsal, a new netball court, and an artificial turf training ground are all being developed. The Recreation Grounds are on track to reopen before winter 2024, once all the new turf has grown in. Magazine Bay Marina demolition finishing this weekCouncil contractors, Fulton Hogan, are finishing up the removal of the Magazine Bay Marina this week. Work began in mid-September and, after several delays caused by bad weather, the final steel poles are now being removed. This marks another key step in the wider project to redevelop Naval Point - Te Nukutai o Tapoa. The marina and jumping jetty are being removed due to their poor condition. One section of the marina will remain, and options for replacing the jumping jetty are being investigated.
